You can unlock and lock remotely and you can turn on the ventilation but you can't switch the engine on remotely so you can't have heat.

A slight , but sort of related .....

This remote apps/connected drive thing. I didn't spec it, but I'm lead to believe that there should be some basic functionality, yet when I select BMW online in my car, I just get 'unavailable'.
Do I have to activate anything? I have updated services and it confirms that its done the update and all in order - any ideas anyone?

Beanie, my one came with the connecteddrive but the previous owner hadn't registered it so now it is registered I get it free for 3 years! You have to send a copy of the V5 to customer services on this email bmwconnecteddrive@bmwfin.com and also the last 7 digits of your vin number (normally a letter followed by 6 numbers). Alternatively, call Mick Robinson at BMW on 0800 561 0555 and he will explain the process.

You don't need to send the V5 if you bought it new. You just need to go to www.bmwconnecteddrive.com and register. You will need your VIN number, 2 letters + 5 numbers.

Due to EU Law your car is not allowed to be remotely started/on while idle, so in the EU I am pretty certain remote heating is not available.

Unless you have the ceramic heater which is an option in certain markets (cold).

I used to have a volvo some years ago with an auxiliary heater. Bought when based abroad in the navy. Basically it was a small jet engine that I could set to start on a timer/thermostat combination. Later versions could also be called from your phone. It was very nice never to have to worry about a cold or iced over car again. Downside was that UK dealers could not understand it and it caused all kinds of hassles when the car was serviced.
Didn't I read somewhere that previous versions of the 5 series had a thermos to enable residual heating.

Mine appears to have a timer in the menu for heating? So many things to learn!

Yes - you can set a time (on and off) for the ventilation system to start. Not much use in winter but in summer it's brilliant. When it's warm outside (doesn't even have to be that hot to get stuffy) I set mine to come on at 4:30pm each day. When I leave the office after 5pm all the stuffy air has gone and it's nice and breezy. Stops the A/C going mental because the interior is about 40deg.
