I had a scratch in my bumper and bought a rattle-can of official BMW paint. I sanded it, primed it, rubbed it down and sprayed it. There is no lacquer and there is gloss. It's a single-part paint.

Yes because the product you purchased was a touch up but believe me that is not how the car is originally painted

When I bought touch up of my space grey it came with two cans; a base colour and a water-based lacquer. Jet Black and Alpine White only come with one and it also explains why the paint on those cars is fucking shit. Believe me.

BMW do not use a single stage paint process when they paint their cars, if you won't take my word for then look at this.

Obviously it's a multi-stage process but I still don't think they apply clearcoat for solid colours which is born out by:

1) the paint on solid cars, especially jet black, is terrible

2) The official BMW paint kits come with two parts (i.e. the clear lacquer) on all metallic / xirallic / pearlescent paint but not with solid colours. Even the little touch-up brush kits have two bottles for metallic.

3) The single colour application gives a gloss finish, metallic base-coat does not.

Still, if you think the paint is of a high-quality you don't have a problem.

Genuine bmw jet black touch up 51910419747 two part
Genuine bmw alpine white 51910419747 also in two parts.
I've had a jet black car and apart from the orange peel the paint was exactly what I would expect from bmw.
My son paints cars for a living and I supply computer systems to companies that also paint cars for a living I wouldn't be having this conversation if I didn't know what I was talking about.
Like the link I posted says it is a 5 stage process the 5th stage being the clear coat but if you still don't believe me then perhaps you would like to watch this video

You can't really tell what colour that car is anyway but I believe you. My Jet Black didn't have a noticeable orange-peel effect but it was so soft as to get swirl marks from the most gentle cleaning. Non of the other BMWs I've owned suffered in the same way.
