$3,000 repair?!

Hey guys I had a message pop up saying drivetrain malfunction so I took it in to the dealership the next day. They called me saying that the camshaft needs replaced along with a few other things related to the drivetrain. They said it's going to cost around $3,000. Does that sound like a crazy price?

That actually doesn't sound crazy since BMW dealers charge around $100 per hour for labor. Where I live, it's even higher.

If you trust your dealer, then there's no reason to second guess their estimate. If you have reason to distrust them, get a second opinion.

But to be honest, a $3k repair on a $60k - $90k car is certainly in-line with what I'd expect if something major went wrong. But considering I'm not a mechanic, don't have a clue what's wrong with your specific car, etc, I can't say whether $3k for your specific issue is good, bad or otherwise. I tend to trust my specific dealer - they've done right by me to-date.

The question is at how many miles did Camshaft go bad? Seems like Powertrain items should be covered in 100K miles are you beyond warranty?

The price sounds about right, replacing a cam shaft is a big job. A better question is why the cam shaft fail prematurely.
