Folding seats don't compromise rigidity in the BMW implementation. They're optional because some people don't want them and others are willing to pay up for them. I'd advise anyone buying any car to look at what options it could have vs. what options it actually has before making a decision. If you're ordering from the factory, go through the options list. It's easy enough to do for current models on BMW's websites.

In an ideal situation, yes. However I couldn't afford to buy my car new as a 2012 special order, especially with the additional options I wanted and couldn't get because I bought one out of inventory.

But that's life. If I made enough money for a completely loaded 550i, then I'd be here complaining that my M5 didn't have any of the options I wanted
