No phone required. It uses the sim card built into the car to recieve message and transmit instructions to door module. You need an active BMW assist account and business or professional media packs.

Simon,

Not sure, I haven't tried that yet but I am guessing that it just turns the fans on/off at the prescribed time and does not actually heat or cool unless you have auxillary heating? If I get time this evening I will try it.

Regards
Simon

The best part of the remote app is being able to search for something and then send directions to the car.

On my GT the heating/cooling just seems to on the fan but nothing else - a bit useless, as is the local search which returns results from all over the world rather than 'local'

Thought so... saved me a job this evening!

Agreed the search facility is really useful, althouth most of the time I find I have time to do it from my laptop, but handy when you are out and about.

I seem to remember reading that there was more functionality on card with later build dates, so maybe it's worth a check

If the vehicle has heat-soaked in the sun, running the fan will purge it of much of the heat load, bringing the interior down to ambient. Much better than maybe 120-degrees or more. SO, don't discount the timer based fan capability...the a/c will be able to fully cool it down quicker once you do start it up. Now, if it is overcast and nasty, you'll not have any solar heat buildup, and yes, it proably would be a waste...depends on where you live, and the current conditions.

Mine was built in April 2011, don't know about earlier software. I'm guessing that it is all in the software, and you may be able to get yours updated, if it doesn't currently support it. Best source is probably ask the service department where you bought it.

I just signed up for a UK itunes account and installed the app. For my US auto purchased in Jan 2011, the functionality is limited to locate auto, honk the horn, flash the lights, lock and unlock, and local google search that can send the result to the car. I'd love to be able to have the car pre-heat in the winter or pre-cool in the summer.

The app hasn't been released in the US yet, so installation on your iphone is a bit convoluted.
