not sure about USA law, but in HK if they declare storm warning level 8 or above, and your car suffers, the insurance company is off the hook as then you are not supposed to be driving.

This actually makes a lot of sense... but only if it's through no fault of the driver. If you're parked somewhere and it floods it should be covered. You can't always protect your car when you're trying to protect yourself.

The US needs to update some laws.

This is so true about insurance. It's insane!

Not in all cases....... There is no clear statement to that effect. What most people confused that with is what Insurance calls UNSAFE OPERATION of the vehicle. For example, if you are on the way home from office in your car when the typhoon signals are hoisted, then you will be covered. Or you are on the way moving the car from unprotected area to a covered parking, you will be covered.

On the other hand, you driving the car out to check out the storm weather is not considered safe operation of the vehicle and will NOT be covered.......

But when car is stationary parked in covered area, even if the car suffers water damage or other physical damage, insurance will cover.....

I like the concept but it seems like it'd be really hard to apply in real life. Whose to say who was doing what and for why before and during the storm? I can see the big insurance companies denying legitimate claims left and right blaming the owners.

Depends a lot on what sort of insurance you buy. The companies offering "cheap" insurance often don't allow enough for catastrophe claims, so they will look for ways to deny claims. The ones that charge more usually allow for more claims, so they pay up (most of the time ).

You'd think they would probably move them all to a safe zone. Probably not the most fun thing to do

This here really pisses me off.

"my brother had 6 feet of water in his garage
Ferrari 360
Bentley Flying Spur
G55
Ford Rousch F150"

Why is brother here keep all these expensive cars in his garage when they had plenty of warning of the areas where the storm would hit the hardest.

I feel sorry for the owners of the car, but it would be worse if it had been a loved one they had lost.

Be thankful.

This isn't the 04 tsunami in Asia destroying what little ppl had which wasn't even insured.

They'll deal with it.

+1 There has been deaths, people have lost homes and relatives. Complaining about a car, seems a bit shallow right now.

Its almost like people didn't know this storm was coming even with a week of warning. F10 is the only car on the road in pictures -_-. Don't feel bad at all.

Yep totally sad that he could afford those expensive cars but didn't have sense/means to move them to higher ground.

Its sad to see all these cars totaled! As for BMW's the salvage yards in NJ/NY will be filled with extra parts. Called me old school, but i like to grab a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning and take a stroll thru a salvage yard to see what "catches" my eye. For car enthusiasts salvage yards are like gold mines. Get parts for your car, for pennies to the dollar.

Sandy was an equal opportunity disaster. Used car buyers beware, there will be a lot of flood damaged cars on the market.

nothing in the northeastern united states, i think he is referring to when he said that...

on an unrelated note, sorry for your loss....
but how does the water rise that fast that you don't think to run to your $50k vehicle and drive like hell to somewhere it'll be safer? not to be a troll or something...
