Connected drive remote app failures related to deep sleep?

This is just a theory

Background
My car is a 2012 F11 so no fancy 3G/4G I have the dog slow CIC version of connected drive running over GPRS

The BMW remote app has never ever worked reliably for me I typically want to enable the timed ventilation but at the moment I get a 100% failure rate from the app it always fails at the send to car stage.

A few days ago I tried it with the ignition on - it worked so I know the comms does work

My theory
I think when the car is locked after a few minutes it goes into deep sleep to the point that even the cellular reception goes dormant and it is no longer listening for remote commands.

Is that possible?

Might there be a firmware update from BMW that fixed that mine is almost certainly as it was from the factory with 2012 ecu firmware.
Does this happen to other people, do my symptoms fit?
Could it be I have messed something up with my coding in LDW, disabling Auto stop start etc?
Is there a coding option to stop the CIC or whatever unit is listening for the remote commands from going into sleep mode so I can try it as an experiment?
