So my expected purchase fell through...

Not too annoyed and figure that I might just build my own, but a bit of a dilemma.

The car will be my daily driver
My job requires 24x7 mobility
Regardless of what I get it'll get winter tires in the winter and summer tires in the summer
It'll be mostly loaded (prem, tech, one of the sports packages, prem audio, CA)
My parking garage has rather tight turns with people abandoning their cars in foolish locations making the daily drive in/out a bit of a challenge

So, please help me decide between x-drive (required maybe a handful of days a year but a safety issue) vs IAS (a convenience item but used daily)

If you take Public Transportation, you can work on the bus and let someone else do the driving.

True. I can drive a half hour to a metro (with a 45 minute ride from there) or drive 45 minutes to work. When I go to my other worksites I could drive the half hour to metro, take an hour ride to the train station the board a train for another hour. Once off the train I could take a taxi for 45 minutes to my destination - or I could drive for 90 minutes.

I lived in Munich and Vienna for many years and never drove anywhere. Public Transit in the US is horrible - one of the good reasons for buying a 5.

Your daily routine seems too complex. Ask your boss to work from home, at least 3/5 days, if possible.

Good idea. Boss, can I please crash test cars at my house?

Nice to see someone crash testing cars and opting for a BMW.

You know, there are lots of really good (as far as crash testing goes) cars out there. Most modern cars are pretty decent these days and I'm always amazed at the good crash ratings that tinker toy cars like the Smart get.

Virtually any modern mainstream western car will protect you equally well and the differences are really driving dynamics and features.

I would go without the xdrive if you are opting for winter tires anyways. Unless you live in the country side where they don't have slow plows, but in cities is fine as you said you would only use it for a handful of days.

I wish I had x-drive when driving in the city winter-time. Polished ice from busses and cars wheel spinning trying to start by the red-lights can be a real problem.

Yes for the x drive, the start up must be better then non x, but stopping is the same for x and non x vehicle. A 4WD will give you a false sense of security as yes you can pull off as if there were no snow and ice, then when you stop you realize you are just as helpless as other cars.

If condition is really that bad, take your time. You will get there eventually.

Ceb, you should really consider a horse. Just look at the poll result.

Yeah, I guess a horse would give me all wheel drive and the variable turning circle.

Now, the big question is what type of horse and the color. It would need to match the chestnut saddle

Since you are committed to the summer / snow thing, don't worry about xDrive. Personally, I would get HUD. The gauges alone are worth the $$.

Not to mention the gray matter of the drivers involved.
