** Need help on final delivery on NEW F10

Soon to be Fellows,

So when this all started I wanted a M sports package. I live in Chicago in a suburb and roads aren't too bad but winters can be awful. The salesman, "and I take what they say lightly", said that The M sports package can be brutal and his customers come in every Fall and swap out the tires. 1,200 every Fall for winter tires on the M wheel is a must he said and the tires only last 12-15 K per set of tires.....not up for this every winter just to stroke my ego with the M package!

Either he cant find a 2012 with an M package or he has a point. The NON M sport package isn't that bad looking and it has a dooable wheel in my opinion and I don't plan any mods on this car...

Ant thoughts are greatly appreciated!
Adam--

He's not lying. The summer tires are useless in Chicago snow and cold.I went through a set of Dunlop Run Flats in 9 months (1 track day as well) but am switching to Pilot Sport All Seasons for non winter months and Blizzaks in the winter. My car came with 18" wheels which the Blizzak Run Flats are on will act as my spare when I'm using the Pilot Sports.

Which dealer are you looking at?

Summer performance tires are not designed for temperatures below 40 degrees. You need to get either winter or all season tires (they are cheaper than winter tires but the grip level is between summer and winter in adverse weather conditions). I have all weather tires but I do not usually drive in snow. If this is going to be your daily commute car all year around, you should get x drive.

Perhaps you should get dynamic handling package instead of M Sport package which will give you great handing without the aerodynamic kit.

Having done both, I prefer the a non x drive with snow tires vs an x drive with all season tires.

Thank you....thats food for thought...

I am talking to two dealers. MotorWorks and Knauz. I am leaning toward the non M sport package and the standard sport in Xdrive. Will this be acceptable to winter driving. I gotta say this is an everyday car. Not to keen on swapping tires. So does that mean I need to find a car w/out run flat tires or does the Xdrive negate my tire issue?? Thank you, this is rather helpful. The guy at the Motorworks dealer has been there 13 years.....

To be honest in Chicago you will need to swap tires regardless if you got the Msport or normal Sports package.

All xdrive cars comes with all season tires so you aren't gaining anything by not getting the Msport. I personally think the F10 looks 100x better with the Msport and if you feel remotely the same way i suggest you just get it now and don't regret it later on. Just factor in a set of good snow tires if you plan on driving it in chicago winters...

Both the M-sport or the sport package with X-drive comes with the Good Year Eagle LS all season tires. I live in Boston, our winter is pretty similar to yours. With the GY tires, you might be able to get away with it for anything under 6 inches, but anything over that, you should probably keep the car at home. There is also the issue of ground clearance, so even with snow tires, you will not be able to drive the car in heavy snow.

Over here in Norway the majority of customers opt for the M-sport package. But no one even considers driving through the winter without proper winter tires! That is a MUST!

We have a lot of bad roads and the M is NOT a problem. But tires used in the winter season needs to be suitable for it.

In my opinion it isn't as much a choice between M or standard, but which tires you use in the winter. I'd go with the M package all day!

Since you are living in a suburb (I live in NYC where I have no storage space and don't drive to work everyday), you should totally swap tires. See the video below where it shows all season vs winter vs summer.

Interesting video by Tire Rack. It hits some valid points and driving on an ice rink their is no doubt that turns are nearly impossible. Its a good sales video for the fall months!

Thanks for the post guys. Its a tough call. Their are a few Sport packages left but the M-sport packages are gone for 2012. I was trying to scoop up a 2012 as my Infiniti is over this month. May go with standard sports package. Their is a Dark Graphite metallic and I am slowly liking that over Alpine White.

I know Knauz will store the wheels/tires you're not using if you buy from there. Just some food for thought. Others may do it as well..

if you're in the chicago burbs, you have to get xdrive imo. i personally couldn't go without m-sport either. anyway, you'll be fine as long as you get both. lol

don't settle for something because it's what the sales person told you. always get what you want if it's in your price range otherwise you will always be thinking or wishing after it's too late.

ps-why do ppl that live in the burbs say they live in chicago. chicago is a city, why don't people say illinois if they think ppl won't know where they are by the suburb they post? it would be closer to the truth and ppl know where illinois is. sorry, off topic maybe but i've always been curious about that.

Yes I see what you mean. The reason I say burbs is because I live in the city for 12 years and have driven around potholes the size of war bunkers before.

I have 550i x-drive with the M Sport package and I live in Germany. Without a doubt, I will be getting winter tires, although I haven't decided whether or not I'll get different rims or just use the 351s.

I live in the burbs myself and I do not have any issue at all with 535 xi with the all-season tires that came with it. I have put it through snow a number of times and it has solid traction.

PS - The city of Chicago and it's suburbs is usually called Chicagoland here. I believe that's why most of us just say Chicago.

I live in the Boston area and have a 550i M Sport. Since my first Bimmer (E34 525i), I have run winter tires, and I gotta say the cars have been awesome, even before traction control. All of my cars have been RWD -- can't get a stick with xDrive, and that's not negotiable for me.

FWIW, the expense argument is really not that accurate. If you swap over to winter tires, your summer tires will last a LOT longer, so while there's an initial outlay of around $1k the first winter you have the car, you will get about twice as many years out of the summer tires since you're only using them half-time.
