Mercedes E43 Consideration

This being our first pair of BMW's for the wife and I, we are pretty much sold on staying with the brand and moving her to the X5M and I was going to simply move to the 540 or M550xi once our leases are up. Doing some browsing, I stumbled upon the new MB E43 sedan. I think the thing is absolutely gorgeous from every angle exterior wise, and I love the way the interior wraps around you and the two screens are better integrated than their odd "plop a tablet in the middle" setup on some of their other vehicles. Anyone else considering this against their next vehicle? One huge plus is it AWD and so is their E63!! The one thing that I think may rule them out is that their lease prices may be very unfriendly, which will keep up with BMW.

Different driving dynamic between the 5 and the E. I personally prefer the BMW, while I do agree the interior of the new E is pretty nice (especially the screens). However, I still feel like I'm in dads car when I sit in it. Ill stick to the BMW

I'm still not sold on the fully digital screen which includes the speedometer cluster. To me, the YUUUUGE flat panel looks weird and I like actual three dimensional depth to the speedometer cluster with real needles. Unfortunately it looks like everybody is going to the digital gauges so I guess I'll just have to like it. Other than that, I like what I see with the upcoming E43 but from what I've read of the latest reviews, the new G30 5 series is going to be a better driver. It also sounds like the new M550xi is going to be a beast.

Personally I like BMW's approach too - it's more minimalist. I remember sitting my my friend's mom's 2015 C300 and just thinking how it was set up like a spaceship

Maybe it's not as noticeable but if you view the screens in the merc from the passenger side you will see a gap that makes it look as if the screens were just stuck onto the dash.

Just looked it up and that's a crazy looking dash. Love the interior but I've always considered MB, especially the E-class to be super conservative, even yuppy soccer mom car. My dad always drove S-classes and is brand loyal and I've always associated the larger ones to my dad.

I think the new E looks incredibly pedestrian on the outside. Beautiful interiors though.

As others have pointed out, MB and BMW driving dynamics very different. From toe-in on.

I would be interested to hear comparisons once we all can get behind the wheel of G30 and the Merc.

Yea, but from head-on it appears to look good.

I will definitely be closely comparing it to the G30. One thing that has me concerned with both is the possibility of the screen being washed out from sunlight coming in from behind.

If you're looking for AWD and pure comfort may as well hop into the benz because thats purely what its about. Xdrive BMW is a no-no.

The MB's are always going to be a bit more conservative and luxury-oriented vs. sport-oriented in the BMW. Not to say BMW's aren't luxurious, but there's a much sportier element to the design, driving feel, etc.

The electronics, despite the huge screen approach as of late, in the MBs also feel clunkier and older to me. Put it on as big a screen as you like, but I still don't find them as intuitive or responsive. If just want a luxury ride, the MB can do the job. But if you actually enjoy driving and pushing the car a bit, the BMW is more fun.

If you're leasing, maintenance may not be a consideration but as much as I find it ridiculously difficult to do anything to my 550i, my wife's GL is basically impossible outside of an oil change. Her MB was throwing a battery fault code and so naturally I pop the hood to check the terminals only to find the batter is under the passenger's seat and the it's carpeted over! The owner's manual says to cut the carpet to get to the battery.
I do still love her GL, it's a very capable SUV but I dread anything going wrong with it.

I always want to buy a MB but after driving whatever I am considering, I end up with a BMW instead.

Also, if you lease, you are not going to be pleased with your MB payments or its ridiculous maintenance costs.

Yea, I'm afraid of that. The last time I was in a MB dealership, I was helping a friend shop between the S-Class and the 7 Series. The MB salesperson was giving a lease payment on a 115k sticker of 1750, 12k year, 36 mo and also stated we don't discount these cars. BMW was at 1100 for the same terms and miles in a 105k sticker. Of course BMW was who we chose.
