iDrive controller knob

after 40K miles, I've noticed at times that there is greater tension when turning the knob; anyone else experience this? easy fix?

I'm having a similar problem - BMW dealer took a look and couldn't fix it. They're ordering a new controller for installation. They thought, at first, it may be a simple situation - tried lubricants and such, but it appears to be a mechanical fault. So, a new controller was their conclusion. Should have the parts sometime in early January to replace it.

I noticed that turning the knob to the right reaches some sort of limit and it becomes hard to turn. So, I turned it to the left a few dozen times and it seems to be working ok for now.

They probably did a software update on your car as well.

I was at my Indy shop with my 540 yesterday and I asked about the sticking idrive controller on F10. He said it is likely a software bug as it is supposed to give you resistance at the end of a list only.

There should be no mechanical reason for it to have resistance as it is just a free-turning knob.

Mine, at least, is definitely not a software resistance type feel. It's absolutely a mechanical "stickiness" occurring. The dealer was able to put a bit of lubricant to help with it slightly, but it still needs to be replaced (actually need to call them to see if the part arrived).

I'm having the same problem - sticky knob. It's definitely mechanical. I feel strong resistance either clock or counterclockwise and after several revolutions. I wonder if a simple cleaning or lubrication will fix it.

Actually, that entire sentence is dodgy. In fact, the entire post. Perhaps the entire thread. I just reread it again and its full of dooble-entendres....
