In terms of the cars, they will try to repair everyone they can. The rest they will sell off at a steep discount after paying the claim to recover as much as they can. Same way they do it after an accident that is declared a total loss, the insurance company will sell a "totaled" car at a salvage auto auction. This is where you will find a flood of salvage title cars on the market after a major storm. I would never recommend buying a salvage title car because no matter what the cause you are completely at the mercy of the skill of whoever repaired the car for sale. Did they connect the airbags correctly? If they needed to weld, were they skilled enough to do it right? Many stories out there of cars that were death traps, because they would take a car with a front end collision and a car with a rear end collision and cut them in half and weld them back together, badly. |

Thanks, and yeah, agree with you on salvaged cars, and no doubt they never lose. I'm guessing that worst case cost would've been eventually collected through increased premiums for "living in high risk area" or something like that.
Something like this though, would result in huge amount of "totaled" claims at the same time, yikes, owners taking a hit through deductible and lots of work for insurance companies too. |

Insurance was already going to replace my less than two year old roof the previous storm, luckily it wasn't replaced yet so this should only be considered as one claim. Also as you mentioned once there are so many claims in one area they hike up rates on everyone as its considered high risk. Luckily for my car I was on my way home from work and pulled into a mall parking garage and dodged all that hail. |
