Turning Rotors?
Anyone have the original OEM rotors turned vs. buying new ones? I haven't measured them yet with a micrometer, but just wondering if anyone knows one way or the other (yes, if there's life left in them, or no, they are not turnable and must be replaced).

Still not sure on the F10. On the E60 the tolerances were so tight that it was almost never worth turning the rotors, it was easier and safer to replace them. Of course the dealer will say replace the rotors every time you change pads, but that isn't always the case either. If they are still smooth with very minor grooves and/or a lip on the edge, you can just replace the pads. The dealer always prefers replacement, because they charge a nice $1400 easy for a brake job

LOL, yessir, at least. On my first 5 series they quoted me $1600 for rotors, pads, and sensors. Luckily I was about to tell them where they could stuff it when I was reminded I still had maintenance included - so it was free

Holy shizz. That's about what, $400 in parts if you get Zimmerman rotors instead of OE, prolly $600-$700 if you get the OE rotors (I haven't priced all this stuff yet)? Even if you get the OE rotors it's still 1/2 price of taking it in for the work. I'm dumbfounded dude...
When I was a kid, I had a neighbor that kinda served as my father figure (parents divorced when I was 3), and he and his dad were hands-on DIY guys. I used to go over there ANYTIME I saw a hood up or a vehicle on a jack. To this day I credit them (both deceased) with fostering my love of turning wrenches.

I hear you, I pretty much did the same. Rebuilt my first engine with my friend's dad when I was 9, and never looked back. Been able to do everything from suspension to brakes to transmissions to clutches ever since. On the E60s I had I did all maintenance, these are somewhat complicated cars compared to the 70's cars I grew up working on, but they are still just cars. Bolts, screws, and nuts hold them together, that's all. Granted, BMW did have the foresight to frustrate you with a wide variety of torx bits and torx bolts, oh and Allen heads - so invest in sets if you don't have them already

I haven't gone so deep as to rebuild an engine, but boy that sounds like fun (not that i want to be in a position to have to do that). When the F10 came up and i researched the common problems, I was strangely somewhat happy to see I'd likely need to replace the HPFP someday. I was like "sweet, a new thing I get to wrench on!" lol!

Yeah I saw the N54 120K warranty thing and I think what I saw was that the F10s have the same HPFP. Oh well. They're what, $4xx, which surprised me as I figured they'd be $1k. The other thing that had me grinnin was the walnut blasting! I get to take a buncha shit off my motor and then spray walnut shells into it? I thought it was some kinda voodoo when i first heard of it! Now, I can't wait to do it! WTF is wrong with me???! Gawd I need a therapist....

LMAO, yeah, walnut blasting is one of the few things I will leave to someone with experience. Luckily it's a fairly cheap service here in SoCal, about $250. Which makes it cheaper than the trans flush on our cars (which kits are around for about $300).

From what I've seen, $250 is a FANTASTIC price! For me, the lure of getting to hook my shop vac up to my 300hp motor is just too enticing for me to pass up. Changing out the trans fluid is also on my short list. I did it on my automatic E90, it's a PITA, but was pretty cool to drop the tranny pan (filter was built into the pan on that tranny) and see all the ZF mechatronics craziness staring at me. haha!

Remember that our OEM front rotors are two pieces with aluminum hats to same unprung weight (something like around 2 pounds per side) when cross shopping for aftermarket that will most likely not be 2 pieces.

Yeah thanks jay, a friend of mine also mentioned to me that the OEM rotors are 2 piece and non OEMs will likely not be. 2lbs per wheel is a fair trade off for saving probably more than $100 per rotor, at least it is to me anyway.

They want almost 400$ each rotor with my dealer discount ! Hell no son! I'm going to go the Zimmerman rotor route and textar pads as the OEM Pads cracked also. The way I see it, why spend all that extra and I have heard nothing but nightmare stories on the F10 front rotors and pads to have them warp and crack again. Used to run Zimmerman/textar on my e46 and no warping and OEM type braking. Just my 3 cents.

I just can't sacrifice the initial bite. Tried it on my old e46. But the brake dust cleaning is really getting to me in my older age

Thanks for all the input guys. I have Zimmerman's on my M3 with OEM pads for non-track/AX and PF08's for track/AX and they've done great so far. I have a friend with a track-prepped E36 M3 that showed me some zimmerman's that came off his car after about 12 track days and several AXs and they were in great shape.
I like the OEM pads a lot, so I think I tend to feel like dadysev, I don't know if I'd like not having that initial bite. On my truck I put the best pads Autozone has to offer in "their brand", and they are horrendous. That initial bite the OEMs had was completely gone. However, I did not replace or turn the rotors on the truck as i only drive it like 5k/year, so that may be the root cause of the crappy performance. I have always wanted to give the Hawks a try, so I don't know what I'll do yet.
