F10 Brake Pad Wear warning icon??
the car is an f10 2010 530d
it has i-drive. does one get a visual icon warning light on the dash like on the e39 once the pads have reached their wear limit or is it only possible to view the pads as being worn through cbs thru idrive which tells you how many miles before pads need changing? |

Yes you get the icon, I only use iDrive as a guide and wait for the icon in the instrument cluster to light up before thinking about booking the car in

thanks a lot ,so I will wait for icon to appear on the dash before I change rear pads as idrive cbs says 1200 miles to replacement

Yes and I normally visually check them and keep driving it after the instrument cluster light comes on, I did about 500 miles last time I changed and they still had some material on them...

Mine automatically deletes the cost from my account to the BMW dealer and thus forcing me to not procrastinate thinking "It will heal on its own and grow a pair!"
This is part of the new BMW auto command. It commands my wallet.

I just had my rear brakes done. I was told there is one sensor on the rear and one on the front. Sorry, I don't know which side. I doubt there are any countries where two would be required.
Please be aware that most brake rotors on these cars wear fast and are relatively thin. As a result rotors and pads (and senors) are usually required.

CBS, is proactive and it's based on your driving style, number of actuations, etc. Keep in mind, if you have ACC or constantly have the traction control system intervening, your brakes could be worse than you might imagined. Finally, CBS is part of your contract with BMW. 50% of the time, CBS says to change the pads, but there is still plenty of meat on them and not near the sensor tripping. In these cases, the tech will reset your mileage based on thickness off your pads and send you on your way---without changing your pads. That's why it's better to use BMW tampons instead of pads---you can then tampon the brakes without fear of smashing your car and bleeding all over the place. Nobody will notice! |

CBS is an indicator of approximately how much mileage you have left but they are not exact by any means, and sometimes they are faulty.
My 2012 was reset to 60,000 km two weeks after I got my car in 2012. Recently when I got a new set of rears the CBS still said 60,000 km for the rears and 19,000 km for the fronts. Obviously, the CBS is not functioning for my rear brakes so I don't trust the front indicator as a result. The CBS was reset to 50,000 km for front and 70,000 km for rear. The advantage of the sensors is that the pads must be worn down enough that the sensor makes contact and indicates in a very positive, mechanical way that the pads are done. No computer guesswork.
