2013 or 2014 535 M Sport owners!
Hi guys, I am thinking about upgrading from my old e60 to a 2013 or 2014 535 M Sport. I was hoping someone who has owned one can answer some questions. I have heard that there has been some reliability issues, is that true? If so, what issues have you had? I am buying CPO, but wonder if there is anything I should look out for? Thanks in advance, Brad

I have a 2013 M Sport 535i with over 38,000 miles with no issues yet. It’s a CPO so I have the extended warranty and before that expires I will probably move up to a 7 series. There was an article some where the 2013 year model was the best model out of the 2011-2015. If I can find the article I will post it.

Hey Brad, good to see you again bro. I picked up mine about a month ago now, a 2013 535, I like it a lot. The reliability issues revolve around the N63 TT V8 of the F10 550, there was a CCP (Customer Care Package) done by the dealers to supposedly correct the issues it had. However, I had 3 friends lemon their 550s and another with a 750 that has had many many issues (all after the CCP). Which is why I chose the 535 to replace my E60 550.

I recommend the 2014 to get the LCI improvements - improved steering, better insulation, improved passive suspension (firmer), newer iDrive (pre-2014's are losing BMW online services at the end of this year due to having older telecommunications hardware).
In terms of reliability, F10 535's have been been statistically average, with no one area of significant problems that I've seen. I haven't had any issues with my 2014. The N55 engine is solid in terms of reliability and problem areas, unlike the N63's in the 550's which as mentioned above is the reason for the F10 reliability issues. If you decide on a 2014, check the build date because the very early builds (7/13 through mid 9/13) did not have the 704 passive sport suspension so the ride height will be 3/8" higher on those and the suspension slightly softer. |

Thanks a lot for the input guys! I REALLY appreciate it! My 2004 e60 530i sport has been a damn good car! I have put over 150,000 miles on it and it still runs and drives AMAZING! I am a bit hesitant about the newer BMW's because of the turbos and other reliability issues I've heard of. I thought the 2013's were LCI's, Thanks for the heads up! I guess when I'm ready, I will look for a late build 2014 535i M Sport. Again, I appreciate all of your input, Brad

I had a 2013 F10 535i Msport without any issues. The only issue with the V6 models that I have read is regarding some of the RFT's. As others said, it is the 550 with the engine troubles.
I now have a 2016 F10 535i Msport and am really enjoying the LCI upgrades as well as some additional Driver's Plus and LED features. It is too early to tell as I just picked up car in January whether I will have any problems, but you will really enjoy the decision to focus on post LCI models when it comes time. |

OP, I got a 2013 based on the vintage as being very good. I actually looked at the 2013 as it was the 3rd year of the build, was looking for a manual Transmission (last year of it) and coming off lease there is a very good supply to choose from and BMW offering .9% money up to 5 years!!! Regarding LCI on the 535i your looking at some tech upgrades. the iDrive was upgraded in 2013 so it has the bigger screen if you get NAV. The advice of wanting a post LCI 550i is good advice. Remember, most of us will advocate for our decisions so its bias. IM only relaying my experience because I very much wanted a 2013 and did not see the LCI as must have. As mentioned the transmission was at the top of my list so it was narrow from there. I don't know what your parameters for shopping but I had a list of what I wanted and was willing to pay up for the right car.

Three of the biggest differences I noticed are the multi-color HUD, multi-contour seats with increased lumbar support/ directional settings, and navigation voice instructions. The navigation actually informs the driver of which side street at which the destination is located up to a block before reaching said target instead upon reaching it or past. However, the last change might not be a selling point if someone uses an alternative navigator on their phone or they could convince dealership to update vehicle software and maps to current year.
EDIT: Nalod makes some great points though. Two of my sisters are looking to buy cars in the next six months. I have told them both do do their research and find out when cars got face lifts; however, if they find that they do not like or care about the changes to go for the older model at a better price. I don't like the reflection glare from the HUD frame. Power side bolsters are neat, I had them on my 3 but I don't miss them. All things the same, I would go for the LCI but rarely two cars are alike or the same price. I suppose the steering wheel on Msport might be the biggest thing I notice. The new one is very nice. Brad, I too had a 2007 E60 and loved that 530i Motor!!! The N54 engine, the first of the inline 6 turbo's did have some issues with water pump, coils and some premature Turbo needing replacement. The N55 seems to be a much more reliable engine. It exists in both the 2013 and 2014. While it does not have the power of the 550i (it makes the 550i owners feel better when you say that), the engine is more than ample, (more than 530i) with good track record.

Nice, the colors are very nice. I don't think I have that. It does open with the lovely multicolored "BMW" screen but I don' think it has blue highways!
The Speed limit feature is a nice touch. MY garmin does that as does my wifes audi.

I agree the colors are nicer. Though, I updated my parents navigation on their BMW and they still insist on using Waze.
I think the car has great visibility and I do not need the Drivers Plus features, but they are definitely nice to have. I have a lot of speed traps were streets randomly alternate between 30, 35, and 45 mph; when street signs are not posted frequently enough the SLI is a plus. |

I agree that the multi-color HUD is a step up from the older models and would definitely recommend it. I had a 2013 F30 with the older style HUD and when approaching an exit on the highway, the HUD just showed the exit ramp in a simplified orange color. On my 2016 F10, the exit ramps show just like the above picture, very nice!

That was the N63 which is the V8 and not the inline 6 in 535i.
