April 11, 2016 Press Release

Munich.
With more than two million vehicles sold, the current BMW 5 Series sets new benchmarks in the premium business segment. Since its market launch in 2010, the sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series has been best in class in terms of design, driving dynamics and efficiency. As a result, it has become the most successful BMW 5 Series generation to date, also clearly leading the world’s bestseller lists in the segment for the last six years. Compared with the previous generation, sales of the current BMW 5 Series have even risen by more than 42 percent.

The BMW 5 Series is in demand worldwide.
Since the start of production in 1972, a total of more than 7.5 million vehicles of the sixth-generation BMW 5 Series have been sold. Therefore, this series is one of the decisive factors in BMW’s success story. Moreover, for six years now, the current generation of the BMW 5 Series has been the market leader in the premium business car segment. Last year alone, more than 347,000 customers worldwide opted for a BMW 5 Series Sedan, a BMW 5 Series Touring or a BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo.

The series owes its extraordinary popularity partly to the wide range of engines. A broad spectrum of powerful and efficient four, six and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines are available for the BMW 5 Series. It ranges from the BMW 518d (combined fuel consumption: 4.7- 4.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 124–114 g/km)* to the extremely dynamic M5 Sedan delivering 412 kW/560 hp (423 kW/575 hp with Competition Package, combined fuel consumption: 9.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 231 g/km)*. Furthermore, the BMW 5 Series is optionally available either with rear-wheel drive or with BMW xDrive intelligent four-wheel drive. With the comprehensive range of BMW ConnectedDrive features and unique services such as Intelligent Emergency Call with Accident Severity Recognition, the BMW 5 Series also sets standards in terms of vehicle networking.

Numerous awards for the BMW 5 Series.
The international esteem and success enjoyed by the current BMW 5 Series are also underscored by the large number of distinctions and awards it has gained during the last six years. For example, the BMW 5 Series won the reader’s poll “BEST CARS 2016” conducted by “auto motor und sport” and was able to win this award in the category “Upper Midrange” for the sixth time in succession. The BMW 5 Series was also similarly successful in the readers’ poll “Auto Trophy” conducted by the “Auto Zeitung”. Furthermore, the BMW 5 Series was honoured with numerous design prizes such as the “red dot award”, the “iF Gold Award”, the “Good Design Award” and the Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany. Renowned market researchers from J.D. Power and Associates have confirmed the high quality of the BMW 5 Series. The premium value, reliability and outstanding ergonomics offered by the BMW 5 Series were honoured in the “Initial Quality Study”. Moreover, the BMW 5 Series also came first in the “APEAL” study, in which customers assess the performance and design of their new car.

It is a beautiful car, just too large for my taste but great milestone nonetheless!

This is both good and bad. As a BMW enthusiast, and having owned 2 previous E60s, I know - the F10 was a departure for BMW, they went away from a true enthusiast driver's car to a more comfortable and sedate car that appeals to more people. This led to record sales numbers, but also a car that is noticeably less capable as a driver's car than the previous E60, the E39, and the cars that preceded them.
Don't get me wrong, I have an F10 and I enjoy it. It meets the needs of mee and my family better than the E60 it replaced. It is larger and more comfortable for everyone. However, it also does not give me the thrills in the twisties that the E60 did.

The only thing the V10 had over the TTV8 is that beautiful exhaust note IMHO. I believe the TTV8 is much better than the V10 in every other aspect.

Except for the fact that the M5 is no longer the preeminent sports sedan. Thanks to the bean counters in the M division, the current M5 is maybe 3rd among "super sedans", lagging behind both the AMG E63 and the Cadillac CTS-V. This is sad for me, since I have loved BMWs since I was a kid, and they have always been just that little bit better than the competition. The E39 M5, for example, had less power than the E55 AMG. However, it was slightly better in every tested aspect of performance. Better cornering, better track times, better braking. That has evaporated

I agree let's see those test again when the M line drops their AWD M5/M6.

Somehow I doubt it will, with the head of the M division stating he never sees an M car with more than 600 hp (which the next M5 will have). The next gen E63 and CTS-V will most certainly have more. And both have braking on par and better handling than the current M5. This means that M needs to play catch up with the M5/M6, because it appears that they are focused solely on the M3/M4

I have a different view on things, we'll just have to wait until the AWD drops and see those numbers and comparison.

The F10 is in its 7th and last model year, yes caddy one upped the m5 but if it couldn't it would have been a failure given the 5 er entering the end of its life.

I'm sure the new 5 will stack up quite well against the competition. Remember, with technology advancing so quickly the ebb and flow of product life cycles has a bigger and bigger impact on how appealing one brand may be against the older models from the competition.

Not surprised. It's a lot less offensive in looks than the E60 and provides what you would want in a luxury car of this size.

Yeah, the fake exhaust playing through the speakers is leagues better than the natural symphony that the V10 gave you.

Very true, and having driven heavily modded versions of both the E60 M5 and the F10 M5 - was the F10 faster? Yes, but that was in a straight line and it didn't FEEL faster. For daily driving the DCT is awesome, because it is very good in traffic and when thrashing the car. While the SMG was horrible in city driving, it was sublime when combined with the trans tuning and kicking butt on a track. The E60 seemed more responsive, definitely gave better feedback through the steering wheel and the butt, and at high revs the sound of the V10 can only be matched by a Ferrari V12.

Title should be "Two Million F10/F11/F18/F07 5 Series Sold". F10 alone, is at just over a million.
