ED: First night suggestions?

I take delivery of my 550i in Munich at 5:20 PM on a Monday night. Oh joy...right into rush hour traffic! I figure I'll stick around as long as I can and let traffic dissipate.

But I need some help. I'm going to want to drive. I figure it makes sense to go for a decent drive (60 - 90 minutes) to get dinner, but I have no idea where to go. Salzburg?

I'd appreciate any suggestions of towns or restaurants.

Thanks, everyone!

I'll give you an idea of my ED route. Munich 2 nights. Pick up car after 1st night. Driving to Salzburg. Stay one night. Then off to Linz. Stay one night. End up in Vienna and stay 2 nights. Drop off car in Vienna and fly back to LA.

Bump.

Still looking for suggestions on where to have dinner the day I get the car. Hoping for someplace that's about a 60 to 90 minute drive from Munich since my delivery is at 5:20 PM. (OBTW, how bad is commuter traffic near Die Welt?)

You haven't said what type of food you're looking for but if you want the real deal local German food that is uniformly excellent, then I'd recommend Gasthaus Gottfried in Kreuth which is really close to Tegernsee which is really pretty. I've been going there for over 15 years and have never been disappointed. This would be approx one hour from the Welt on the Autobahn direction Salzburg. If you have navigation, it would be helpful.

Thank you!

By the way, this will be my sixth car with navigation. I got my first one in 1996 -- it was one of the first cars with navigation in North America.

You're welcome. PM me if you have any other questions, but I think you will enjoy the food regardless of what you choose. There are other restaurants along the way, some of which have a better view and there's a Hoffbrau Haus in Tegernsee but their food does not touch Gottfried (all the locals eat there too). I'll be eating there a couple of times in July (no car pick up this time). Have a great trip.

Drink enough bier (recommend Erdinger Weissbrau) and talk to your new BMW like its your first love.

The nice people at the Welt managed to get my delivery time moved up, so I was able to head out of Munich by about 4 PM. Had a LOVELY dinner at Gasthaus Gottfried (thank you so much for the recommendation), followed by a blast up the autobahn, thru Munich, then up past the airport. This is QUITE a car. The torque is noticeable RIGHT AWAY (especially compared to my E90 M3), and I don't have any problems with the handling (especially on Sport) or steering. The goofy grin on my face every time I press down on the accelerator and feel all that torque is gonna take a long time to go away. And I got to try the Parking Assistant near my hotel -- worked great, but so friggin' weird!!

Glad you like it. I ate there a total of 4 times in July and it was great as usual. The scenery on the way to the restaurant isn't bad either. When is your expected delivery back to the US?

The scenery throughout Bavaria was gorgeous. On my way back from Neuschwanstein, I had the nav system set wrong (usually use "fastest") and I ended up driving through some absolutely beautiful, picturesque villages. Wouldn't have seen THAT if I'd taken a bus tour!!

The car is on the Asian Emperor, which left Bremerhaven today. It's due in NJ on the 24th; hoping to have it for Labor Day weekend.
