I test drove an X5 and GT back to back. The GT does not drive like an SUV. Not even close. Period.
I highly recommend DHP if you can afford it. That plus the handling improvements made in the 2014 make a decent handling car even better. Mine has Integral Active Steering (rear wheel drive only) and turns like crazy. Also keep in mind, the GT interior draws from the 7 series whereas the F11 is from the 5 series. An example is the small drawer above the radio in the GT. It's fantastic. I use it nearly every time I use the car. Perfect for phone, eyeglasses, badges, parking lot stubs … I don't know if the 5 series ever got a power adjusted steering wheel but the F07 does and it's setting is stored as part of the Comfort Access feature. This adds steering wheel adjustment to the automatic seat and mirror positions stored for each driver. That extra width on the GT is valuable if you ever want two adults and a carseat in the rear. I've done it several times with a Recaro Performance Ride model car seat that is an 1 1/2 more narrow than most car seats. YMMV Lastly, one of the often ignored features of the GT rear seat design is that the back seats can be adjusted fore and aft as well as tilt. This is because the GT has a 1" partition behind the seat (it can fold down same as the seats). In addition to more legroom than the 5 series (something there are many complaints about) it also makes the rear seat itself more comfortable and can be different for each passenger. In combination with the dual opening trunk, the partition and trunk let you access the trunk but keep the passenger compartment cool/warm (like a sedan). The F11 has a 7 position adjustable backrest.

My old man thought the same. As someone who has owned the an X5, F11 and the F07 I think that comment is pretty valid. It is not an SUV but it feels closer to one than a regular 5 series. It feel like a jacked up 7 series. |

Meaningful use of those words imply that you and your Dad think the GT handles better than 50% of the difference between a 5 series sedan and an X5. I completely disagree. The GT handles closer to a 5 series sedan than an X5.

Nothing to do with handling, just the overall feel of a GT is closer to living with an X5 than it is a 5 series. Living with it day to day and the ride height etc. feels closer to the X5.
But then I always thing the X5 tries too hard in the handling department and suffers as an SUV for it. But I have never been in an SE X5, all have been M-Sports. I would actually like to try an X5 SE on 17/18" wheels and see what I think. |
