Airbag Malfunction After Steering Wheel Removal

Hello All,

I took my M Sport steering wheel off my 2013 535xi and sent it away to have the leather reupholstered. While it was gone, I installed a cheap non-M steering wheel I got off eBay. I used the airbag from the M wheel.

While reinstalling the M Sport steering wheel, I turned on the car with the airbag out to check the functionality within the buttons on the wheel (Entertainment, phone, Audio, etc.). They all worked fine. I powered down the car, put the airbag in and the error still exists. "Driver restraint system malfunction"

The wires and harnesses all look good and intacted. Do I need to clear a code somewhere to get this condition to cease?

Thanks in advance

From what I understand if the airbag is missing with power to the system you will get that fault and only the dealer (or someone w/the right programming tool) can reset it.

Dont mess with the airbag with the battery connected in the car. I believe it was the same thing in my e92.

All you do is use the ESYS transmitter to clear all DTC's.

Thanks all! I was able to use the ESYS transmitter to clear all DCTs as you suggest.

Oddly, the lane departure warning and blind spot functions do not work. They fail immediately. I am thinking the wiring to the vibrator in the steering wheel could possibly have been the steering wheel got reupholstered. I left all electronics in the wheel when I sent it away.
