cupholder lid will not open

so in my wifes car (2012 528xi)- the cupholder lid will not open.

I can tell that some loose coin has gotten stuck in there, but its stuck in the closed position.

Anyone have any recommendations on how to jar it open? Ive seen threads with the exact opposite predicament- the loose coin, wont let the cupholder close- but that seems like a lot easier to work with. In my case the lid is closed, and I'm afraid if I use any more force, I'll break the lid entirely.

Thanks for any help.

I had the very same issue with my 2011 550i. I think the mechanism is a design weakness. In any case, I had one replaced under warranty. The second one sticks sometimes in the closed position. I have learned to press down on far right lower corner of the lid, not in the middle. Try it and see if it works for you.

And the lesson here is to only carry folding money. You'll need it at the dealership anyway.

Thanks for the post. No coins in my car.

I put quarters in my ash tray but I seal the gap on the hinge side of the cover with a piece of felt tape so the coins cannot fall in.
