530d Eco Pro Mode

Hi guys,

When I drive my 530d in Eco Pro Mode, it seems to absolutely love sitting at about 900-1000rpm. Which is fine, but when I apply any sort of throttle at this level of revs I get an annoying and intrusive resonating noise from what sounds like the exhaust or something.

I suspect this is a 'feature' of the ridiculously low rpm rather than a fault as the car has done it since new. I'd always thought that driving along at this sort of RPM was a bad idea but as it's an automatic I have no real choice over it's decision to this.

Anyone else find this? I'll get it mentioned at first service if not.

Generally quite low speeds really - 0 to 30mph.

You may well be correct, very low revs in a diesel, not to get some sort of resonance as load is added. Very complex mechanisms (even in the auto TC) to keep NVH levels acceptable at low rpm.

We have a VW with DSG which is changing too early on light acceleration, horrible exhaust induced drone. I'm not convinced on all the Eco-Pro tuning.

What's it like in Comfort mode? I guess it runs a few more revs and no issues.

It's there when pulling away from, say, speed bumps in Comfort mode but generally the revs are sufficiently high that it isn't an issue.

But eco-pro sailing mode is really rather cool around town, and you don't get that in Comfort

There is the possibility remounting the exhaust (tweaking the positions of the mounting brackets) could eliminate it. Needs to be on a ramp and see if it is exhaust vibrations, by gently moving through the critical rev range.

Cannot comment on the 530d but on those occasions when I have used Eco Pro in my 535d (shorter final drive ratio to the 530) it's running at 1000-1100rpm. That's about 52 mph in 8th. IMO it is changing up too early. It makes it sound like my previous 520d....Rough.I assume to save fuel it is running off boost. I don't like it so I don't use it.

It does annoy me a bit how soon it changes up in anything other than sport mode.

The net result is that you either have a car that is a bit more sluggish than it otherwise ought to be, in Comfort, or a car that is hilariously powerful at all times in Sport mode. Sport seems like too much for normal driving.

my 530d does that well. just feels a bit laboured presumably because eco pro tries to maintain as lower revs as it can in the pursuit of economy.
