550xi vs 535xi
As most of you are probably thinking. I should be referred to another post that already had this discussion with this comparison.
Well my main question is this. What is the difference between the 2 besides torque, horse power or speed in general? Does 550 have bigger inner dimensions than a 535? Does 550 offer more feature sets? I'm looking to pick a car up from swapalease and 550xi Msport is my choice over 535xi Msport if there are more differences than just speed. Thanks |

$820/month + M sport + Xdrive + Tire and Rim protection with 1300 miles/month with $2000 down with 24 months left on the lease. Does that sound like an OK deal for a 550?

My '14 550xi MSRP was $88k ... otd was $77k & all fees paid upfront ... monthly was @ $1000 ... put MSDs & some $$ at it to get down to $800/month 36mo / 15k/year, BMW Tire & Rim Protection I might have been able to do better on the lease if I waited (got 8% off MSRP + $3k in BMW incentives + $1k BMW CCA Rebate) ... but I ordered in July '13 and took delivery in October '13 |

Same exact interior dimensions.
If you go online to BMWs website, you can pull down a comparison matrix that shows all the 5-series lines (528, 535, 550) and then it shows all standard and optional features.

You can option out a 535 to have everything a 550 has so technically the two cars only difference is really just horsepower and torque. I've had both and in a nutshell here are the pros and cons
535 Pros - well balance between fuel efficient and powerful Cons - its a quick car but not fast imo 550 Pros - VERY very powerful. plenty of power all the time. head and shoulders faster than the 535. Cons - MPG is pretty awful. On the highway babying the throttle i can squeeze maybe 25-26mpg but local driving i barely get 13mpg. I don't drive to work so I could afford to have a more power/less fuel efficient vehicle. Alan

Hey Alan, I don't drive to work as well. But again before this I used to have a Honda Civic. Will be first time in the family of luxury cars and jumping straight to 550xi lol. The lease is only 23 months so today I'm going to see the car and maybe finalize the deal.
Will keep you all updated. |

Nose heavy and worse handling? Are you serious? Is that even noticeable?

Good info. I'd suspect that the vast majority of 550 owners do not track them.

As for handling differences 99.9% of the drivers won't be tracking their F10's so you won't notice it. I certainly don't besides whatever bmw did with the LCIs because if anything my 550i handles better than my 535xi. Both cars are pigs regardless but the 550 is a much faster pig lol Alan

I'd price out a deal on a new '14 550xi with the options you want before taking that swap. $820/mo may not seem so great on a used car if you can get similar monthly mileage on a brand new one with exactly what you want. Keep in mind with a lease swap, you're essentially leasing a used car - the MSRP is no longer even relevant since you need to think of it as leasing a CPO car. Plus, the whole idea of lease swaps seem a bit messy to me - that may just be me.
As for the comments about the 550 being nose heavy - rubbish. You can push this car pretty hard on the streets and not notice a darn thing. If it takes tracking the car to "learn" of its nose-heavy nature, then so be it... but nobody in their right mind is tracking a 550. The nose-heavy nature of the car would only be the beginning of the issues... let's not forget it weighs 4400+ pounds! Even an M5 seems strange to me on a track, but at least it's designed to be able to do it with some success... not a 550. Less we start complaining that a Lotus Elise makes a pretty poor family sedan next?

With that said ... I am very used to the feel of the 550 now, having put 6k on the clock since October '13 ... and I'm in love with this car. Please don't let our opinions of the 535 v. 550 nose weight bias your opinion of the car. I also agree that I would price out a lease on exactly what you want. You will probably be able to negotiate a better deal on a vehicle that is in stock at a local dealer than on a special order ... however I have always ordered my BMWs to my specification, as 1. There has never been a car on the dealer's lot that was as fully equipped as I would like and 2. It seems that the color combos that the dealers order for their stock are very generic, and never what I would like. Please let us know what options are a "must have" and what would be "that would be nice" and I will help you calculate what a good deal you should be able to get. I am also in NJ, and have shopped many of the local dealers here, so I can give you some feedback on many of the dealers here. |
