Remote Starter

I apologize if I missed a previous thread on this. I searched and could not find one.

What options are there to add a remote starter to the 5 series? This would have to be aftermarket unless a factory installed unit is an obscure factory order option.

I know there are reasons for not doing it. These reasons have been around for ages, and they are not necessarily BMW specific. But for me, having a starter for winter months is a huge deal.

If anyone can share some insight, I would be grateful.

I would think that with the keyless start it could be difficult to fit a new 5er with remote start. If I'm wrong I'd certainly be tempted to do it in spite of the arguments against but I can't with my current "d" because of the glow plug issue.

Up in the Great White North it's easy to see why one would want it!

I have had remote starts on all of my vehicles except on my previous BMW. I use the most reputable place in a City of 1,000,000 people recommended by local honda/acura/GM/ford dealerships.

They will not touch any BMWs as they are worried about the liability and the complexity of the electrical systems.

I wouldn't do it, but if you choose to, make sure you go the longest standing, most reputable installer where you are (but I suspect if that is the company's status, they'll likely refuse to work on a new 5er).

It can be done!

Last week I had a Directed Electronics remote starter installed in my 2012 550xi. More accurately, I had it re-installed as this same unit was previously in my 2007 550i.

Sorry I can't give you all of the technical details but the key from my perspective is to find a great shop with an experienced installer. In other words, you can't go to Best Buy and let the kid with the zits mess with your car. (Hopefully, that's obvious!) I believe the installer copied a shop in Canada that had created a step-by-step set of directions of how to work around the BMW security features and software.

I've used Independence Audio in Independence, Missouri both times. This most recent time it cost about $650 for the installation (no additional equipment was required). It works like a charm! I live in Kansas City and we are in the middle of the hottest summer since 1954. Every day at 515 the system prompts me to turn on the car (and A/C) before I leave work for home.

Love it!
