Im looking to go for a meaty fitment all the way around. I was thinking of squeezing some 275/285 up front. i know the rears can handle 285 but not sure if they will fit ok up front. I have a H&R 1" drop

You can try it, but I honestly doubt it would fit without rubbing. 245, yes, 255, sure - but I've never seen a non-M5 run anything larger without either rubbing badly, or having an offset so ridiculous that the tire stuck out 4 or 5 inches - and even then it rubbed because front wheels have to turn.

This is, of course, not only a question about tire width, but also tire profile (which give the overall tire diameter), wheel width and wheel offset.

Lets see some example of 20" tire sizes for F10:

245/35-20, 26.8" OEM size
245/40-20, 27.7" fits without issues (4% taller)

255/35-20, 27.0" fits without issues (1% taller)
255/40-20, 28.0" rubs the steering knuckle because too large tire diameter (5% taller)

265/30-20, 26.3" fits without issues (2% shorter)
265/35-20, 27.3" possible to fit without issues (2% taller)

275/30-20, 26.5" OEM (rear) size, possible to fit without issues (1% shorter)

When I write "fits without issues" I mean that with correct wheel width and offset the tires will fit without rubbing up front.

Offset needs to be around 30 plus/minus a few millimeters. 8.5" wheel width for 245-255 and 9" for 265-275 tires. With wider front wheels the risk for rubbing will increase especially with 265/35 or 275/30 tires.

Regarding tire diameter the maximum possible is just below 28", since 27.7" (245/40-20) fits without issues and 28.0" (255/40-20) rubs the steering knuckle.

To add, there are different steering racks and tie-rods depending on what diameter wheels the car originally came with (18" or 19").

For the OP, XDrive also has to be considered. My question to the OP is, why the desire to run such a wide tire on the front? It's not needed and quite honestly if for handling, 275 or more is not very pleasant, especially in a 535.

i was considering more for tire rotation. and try something a bit different always been a fan of more aggressive wheel setup.

This suggests that I could use the rear m351 wheels up front with perhaps 255's 35 19's all the way around to give me rotating set?

No the rear won't fit the front without a spacer.

for my fronts i'm running 255 on a 21x9.5 30mm offset and it's pretty close so i'm not sure even a 265 would fit without rubbing? btw, my overall diameter is pretty close to stock OEM

I'm lowered by 1" in the front, rim size 20x8.5 with 255. It rubs if the front bottoms out. 245 do not rub and near flush. Ps mine have blown shocks on the front so maybe the bottoming out will stop once dem Koni's are on in which case no rubbing on 255 up front.

255/40-19 or 255/35-20 on a 9" ET30-32 is about as much as can go that will clear the swivel bearing and the fender without rubbing.

The rear though has a lot of room but it's not of much use since the front is the limiting factor.
