Oil sensor vs dipstick - oil too high

Just had my oil, filter and brake fluid changed at a local reputable indy, but now I have the dreaded 'Oil Level too high!' in iDrive. That's a 520d with 5.2L engine capacity, I left 6L total and apparently they put 5.5L since I have 0.5L left in the bottle. So I went back and told them they put too much oil, they checked with the dipstick several times, it was up to the max, but no more... so they told me it was fine and sent me home. I checked several times at home, the oil on the dipstick doesn't even reach the max, but still the same message in iDrive. Not really sure how the oil sensor measures above max and I have beneath max on the dipstick. Tried maybe 10 times wiping the stick and again and again...

Not sure what to do? I can of course ask them to change again (probably at my expense), live with it or let the car sleep and see if anything changes (I had occasional 'too high' while driving before).

I would trust the dipstick and sounds like you are fine.

With the engines we have in the US, using a dipstick is not even an option. It must be a 520 thing.

Thanks. I think it's specific to diesels.

Update: so they removed some oil via the dipstick tube. Did a couple of short trips - no change still warning. Then I drove about 10 miles at operating temperature and iDrive went to max green. Another 20 miles later it's now 3/4 under max in iDrive thus matching the dipstick. Morale of the story the oil sensor/iDrive need time and miles to update. Go figure...

yes, a few short trips wont cut it. you need to be full up to temp for it to update.

the oil level sensor is very accurate. for next time, make sure you only add exactly how much is required. overfilling is serious..
