Navigation routing

I'm reading on Bimmerfest that some people aren't happy with the way the F10 navigation routes you. There doesn't seem to be much negative commentary on here about the navigation system. I'm getting it regardless, but was wondering if anyone out there thinks the BMW navigation, routing wise, is substandard to say Garmin or TomTom?

Garage List
Every OEM system I've ever used is inferior to Garmin in terms of routing. However, the one in the F10 is about as good as it gets. I have had a couple instances where it took me on a rather circuitous route. But ultimately, I made it there and Garmin's have done the same. It's still worth getting though as the screen is visually impressive, and the f10's without Nav, look odd to me because of plastic insert where the screen should extend. However, 2 grand is an a$$ load of money to spend on something that can be replicated for 50 bucks.

Agree 100%, not sure why that is. My Garmin for routing and useability runs circles around the F10 nav.

... and that is the end of the question ... to nav or not to nav?

I have always had a TomTom and I trust it much more than built-in sat navs. The number of occasion when the sat-nav on my E61 tried to take me through some totally insane routes, like Birmingham to Portmeirion (Welsh coastal town) via near LIVERPOOL (!!!!) to avoid an imaginary road closure, was far too frequent. Another time, when about 5 miles away from home, the iDrive went completely senile and decided to take me through some not-so-scenic route and told me go down the motorway, tripling the distance and adding more minutes.

When I go on a long journey, I have both on the car. My TomTom will also warm me about dreaded speed cams.

Hope the one on F10 is better.

Ummm... I thought running extra circles was what we were trying to have LESS of

On a Garmin, one gets to choose Shortest Route (where highways may be avoided) or Fastest Route (highways chosen over smaller roads) whereas in the F10, we don't get to choose

What do you mean ? Of course, with the F10 Nav, you can choose between shortest/fastest and something in between, avoid toll roads, ferries etc. (Map Screen, 4th Icon from top). Read your manual before complaining too much !!!

I must have been using "Saved Journeys" too often - in the Professional navigation system, the route criteria cannot be changed for such journeys - so says the manual.

Routing can be changed while you are navigating. It's one of the icons toward the top on the left hand side.

My Garmin does the same thing. I often use Nav just for fun on routes I travel frequently (like to/from work or the mall or the dry cleaner). Neither Garmin nor BMW Nav take me the way I would normally go, but they both get me there eventually. Which is what you want it to do, especially in a strange city.

The thing I find really annoying is the inability of the system to recognize my voice commands . I live in a city of numbered streets and avenues, and the stupid thing just doesnt get it. I will say "one three nine one five,(pause) one zero five street, and the system replies "Do you mean one million, three hundred ninety one thousand one hundred five street?"
Enough to make me swear at a computer!
