Fuel Level Sender Recall

Dropped my GT off at the dealer today for some other stuff and they said there was a Fuel Level Sender recall.

Just FYI

Thanks for posting. This issue has been brewing in the background for a while. As stated, it appears to be random and only affects certain cars within a specific production range.

"Relic" and "Avus" how many miles do you both respectively have on your cars? Going off the top of my head, the production date for my car was 11/09.

my build date was 06/10 - I am told it was one of the first GTs with x-drive

have now done 8500 miles after a recent 6000 mile trip from Chicago to Florida and return via Washington DC. Did not miss a beat the whole trip, even after being buried in snow for a week in Philadelphia.

I just turned 2100 miles on my GT. Still not getting a consistent feel from the GT, even after the new fuel pump. Some days its turbine smooth with full power from the Dinan tune. And, on other days there is some slight sputtering on acceleration.
It's going in for service next week for them to look into further.

Angry Fuel pump issue

550GT with x drive, delivered July. 2010, so one of the early builds here. Got an error message this am on the fuel pump, and went to the dealer. Just now was told none are available in US at this time. Have just under 5000 miles on it, and fuel economy has been poor, so wondering if that fuel pump problem may be the explanation? Really not happy about having to wait two weeks for a part to arrive from Germany.

mine was also 07/2010 delivery - as well as fuel sender replaced in December had my fuel pump replaced last week only to have same problem again yesterday! Have just returned from dealer after dropping it off again.

My understanding is HPFP problem is intermittent failure (and loss of power warning) but no impact on fuel economy

Thanks Relic. Begins to sound like the fuel pump part itself is faulty. Or there is a bad batch. I am waiting for the dealer to ket me know if the ten day wait is for a substantive reason, like possible redesign, or just they have run out due to these defects starting to surface. Neither way, even as a thirty year BMW devotee, I am not pleased.

I really hate to hear what you guys are experiencing. Th GT is an excellent car, but these issues will kill the love affair "quick fast - in a hurry". I had issues myself back in December 09 and think I may have been GT #01 anywhere with this type of issue. I took delivery of that particular car on December 28, 2009. Long story short that car went away, and was replaced with my current GT (02/10 delivery). I'm knocking on wood as I type this - as pre and post Dinan tune no "RPEM" symptoms and I just passed the 16,300 mile mark. I don't baby the car and I try to make sure that I never let the gas tank go below 1/4 tank.

I am hoping your issues are resolved quickly, so that you are all completely satisfied with the outcome.

These are great cars, that being said one does not ever want to have to ponder the reliability of a car - regardless of brand - new or old.

Angry

So, after ten days a new fuel pump arrived and was installed in my GT. And today, not two weeks later, the sensor reports a FUEL PUMP problem! There aren't five hundred miles on the one which was just installed! Of course, the service department was already closed for the weekend, so we will fret until Monday, when this is going to be resolved, or replaced. The car doesn't yet have 5000 miles on the odometer!

I drove from Chicago to DC last week and while stopping at the hotel in Pittsburgh had the car stumble again – just like it did before they replaced the fuel pump.

Differences this time were that it kept running (albeit very roughly and did not stall) plus the warning was different with “Drivetrain – Drive moderately. Maximum drivetrain output not available” rather than the previous “Engine Malfunction” - see image.

As before, I stopped and restarted after a few minutes with no roughness and no error warning.

Seems like we could have different manifestations of a similar problem. We love to discuss more detail if you can email me direct – I am in DC all this week.

hey relic,

How's the drive of your GT in Chicago? I'm thinking to get one but not sure if I should get the xi version or the non-xi version considering the snowy situation in Chicago.

I would recommend the x-drive for Chicago. Slightly more fuel consumption (less than 1 mpg) is offset by better grip (in all weather) but the real advantage is in snow, ice, etc.

I also got a spare set of (19" non BMW) wheels with winter tires as the summer performance tires on the BMW 20" wheels are not tractable when it is really cold

Interestingly enough, I too am experiencing the same symptoms and Drivetrain warning with this new fuel pump. The 5GT stalled on me as I was pulling out of a parking spot - I was almost rear-ended as a result. Service appointment scheduled for friday.
So, when do we start pestering NHTSA and calling ABC to follow-up with this issue?

Enough already, you guys should not be experiencing this madness reapeatedly. What's BMW Customer Affairs saying? The dealer should have a PUMA case opened for proper diagnosis, unless of course the replacement pumps are faulty. I am at 17,300 miles now (knocking on wood) and all appears to be well.

I willl tell you that these cars can be tempermental, and takes some getting acquainted with the nuances. Since i have had the Dinan tune, I always remind my SA, that I do not want any unecessary software updates.

I think you all have the patience worthy of an elementary school teacher, but you deserve to be driving trouble free.

I think we all agree with you. Our problem, in my opinion, is that there are too few cases at this point for the problem to be getting proper attention. My own car is at the dealer, who says the software needs an update to integrate with the new pump, and when I pointed out that others have had the drive-train warning after the software update, the response is "we have to follow BMWs procedures in servicing these cars, and the software update is the BMW protocol". My response was "you do your thing, and I will do mine".

Have the GT back from the dealer with its software updated to reflect the replaced fuel pump. Now we notice the functionality of the rear-view camera has changed. *The distance grid is gone, and there is no signal for the presence of hazards either visually or audibly. *All we have is a view behind the car. It is useful, but only half the utility it had before the update.

Do you have the distance marker and audible tone feature selected/on? I've noticed that the software updates usually reverts many driver selected settings to factory default.

I'm sure you know the functions of your car, but had to ask. I have actually inadvertently turned these features off in the past, i'ts real easy to do so.
