The new fuel system seems to be having lots of problems, but the gauge reading, with at least one system backup (miles to empty), looks like something BMW should be able to handle.

My 11 550i fuel gauge moves too fast towards empty . I wish it would slow down a bit.

The e-mail seems to reference the BMW 5-Series GT, not the F10. Or am I misreading something?

Actually it also covers 2010 and 2011 5-series, so that includes the F10. See the NHTSA recall notice below.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 10V331000

Summary:
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN 2010 AND 2011 5-SERIES AND 5-SERIES GRAN TURISMO PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 12 THROUGH JULY 1, 2010. THE VEHICLE’S FUEL LEVEL SENSOR WITHIN THE FUEL TANK CAN BECOME WEDGED AGAINST THE TANK.

Consequence:
IF THIS OCCURS, THE FUEL GAUGE IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WOULD DISPLAY A LARGER AMOUNT OF FUEL THAN WAS ACTUALLY IN THE TANK. AS A RESULT, IF THE TANK BECAME EMPTY, THE VEHICLE COULD STALL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:
BMW HAS NOT YET PROVIDED THE AGENCY WITH A REMEDY PLAN AND NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

Notes:
OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

From first hand experience if you get the "engine malfunction - reduced power" message you may have the issue. So thinking it may be "HPFP" problem and/or this may be a toss up.

I think its an issue with the split fuel tank design.

I wonder what escalated the issue to NHTSA? There must have been several owners experiencing this. I know that there have been F01 and X6 (4.4 TT) with problems as well.

I also question the vehicle production dates - the GT I'm referring to was built in 11/09

UPDATE 7/28/10

Quote:
BMW is recalling around 12,400 2011 BMW 5-Series sedans in the United States and China to fix a fuel-level sensor, the same issue that it recently recalled the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo for. BMW is recalling 6,400 units of the new 5-Series in the United States and 5,000 to 6,000 units in China. Spokesman Frank Strebe said that replacing a part of the fuel tank sensor will take about half a day.

Strebe said that there have been 10 reported incidents in the United States. NHTSA says the vehicles were built from Jan. 12 to July 1.

Thanks for the heads up on the fuel sensor.
I said the same thing, before I signed up for an 07 335. The amount of gremlins in that car astonish me. I so want to order an F10 though... guess Iwill wait for the mid cycle refresh though. By then they should sort out all the bugs.

5 Series Recall

http://autos.sympatico.ca/automotive...ty-fuel-sensor

BMW is issuing a recall for some 2010 and 2011 5 Series and 5 Series Gran Turismos due to a problem with the fuel level sensor.

The fuel sensor can become wedged against the tank, which causes the sensor to detect more fuel than is actually in the tank, causing the potential for a stranded vehicle or even a crash.

The National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration is reporting that 6,080 vehicles are affected by the faulty sensor, all of which were built between January 12 and July 1, 2010.

Though BMW has not yet provided the NHTSA with a solution to the problem, owners will likely be notified when a repair is available. In the meantime it is advising that owners fill up their tanks regularly to avoid running out of fuel.

I did Euro delivery and my car got randomly tagged by customs at the port. Sat there almost 3 months before it was released to VPC. I was just dying waiting. Just my luck.

Its mostly all forgotten history now. Not to worry, this too shall pass.

Had my 535i for 3 weeks/1000 miles. Went on a long trip today, returned and put car in garage. 1/2 hour later I was going out to the store and the car wouldn't start (turned over but wouldn't start). Warning came up the Chasis Stabilization Malfunction". Had to call Assist and they will tow it to dealer in the a.m. Anyone else have this problem?

So if my car is in port, then it will be fixed prior giving to me? It is good. Regarding first year redesign production, yes, it is true. However I bought 135i of first year and it is flawless. I had one recall, but it was really optional for my opinion, they replaced tail lights for some reason, although existing ones worked well.
I also read forum about W212 first year redesign production and do not see much complains, MY11 model has very minor changes. So Mercedes reached tom level confidentiality. Even 1 series got much more upgrades for second year and now even got new engine. So my conclusion that automakers finally gained certain level of experience and taking first year redesign production isn't very risky anymore.

I tend to agree major problems in first years are more a thing of the past. I had 2001 E46 for the first year of 330i and no problems. The only headaches were dropping windows off tracks and a fuel pump after 4-5 years. My opinion is we won't know what's really wrong in about 4-5 years with this model, and by that time, the new model will be on horizon.
