They are bringing a hybrid to the US in December.

Europe version of the 2012 535d (not 540d) will get 313hp and 630Nm.

I did the same thing, waited for the 535/540d, but in the end I went with the 550 instead. I don't understand the U.S. obsession with hybirds over diesels. I would rather buy a 535d verse a 535h.

A hybrid technology is a needed step between the currently outdated fossil fuel combustion technology and the future fully electric-powered engines. It gives the car engineers the necessary practical experience of perfecting the electric propulsion while simultaneously giving general population the currently unmatched range and refueling speed of fossil fuel-based engines. You should think first before throwing out such baseless statements

While we figure out if an all electric future is viable, I am of the opinion that the United States' general populous would be better served by wider deployment of diesel fuel infrastructure, and the broad selection of diesel powered vehicles the rest of the world currently enjoys. People in California and misled tree huggers everywhere else should feel free to choose the more expensive, complex option - as long as the /choice/ is available to the US consumer. I do not consider my comment baseless - perhaps a bit brief/harsh - much like your last sentence. |

Also, waiting for the 535d! Will NEVER buy a hybird!
And where does one think we will get enough Electricity for " the future fully electric-powered engines"? Rolling brown outs are solved in CA? Not! |

Battery-Electric and Hybrid cars have and never will work. Not in the real world. Hydrogen-Electric is the way forwards.

Electric cars suffer from lack of range. This is not a minor issue. It is a fundamental limitation of existing battery technology. A minimum order of magnitude improvement is required to bring the energy density of a battery close to that of gasoline. Absent a technology breakthrough we will have to be content with maximum range under 50 miles before falling back on gasoline backup or recharging. With current batteries, charging takes much longer than filling a gas tank so a network of charging stations all over the place doesn't solve the problem. Even with better batteries, the increased demand for electricity resulting from an electric fleet would drive up the price of electricity negating the savings, to the extent there are any to begin with. Coal fired thermal stations are no cleaner than gasoline.
These are hard limitations and I don't see any resolution on the horizon. Electric cars are a manifestation of environmental politics, not a response to a market demand. They will be gone in ten years, a distant memory.

Hybrid cars have been working over here in the US for over a decade now. They certainly have proven themselves. I've owned many desiels and the 535d is my dream vehicle, but I also own a hybrid. In certain driving situations a hybrid is better than a diesel (mostly city driving for instance).
