Potential '12 550ix buyer, trading in '11 M3

Hey guys, just looking for some general thoughts...

I'm looking to trade in my '11 M3 for something a little bigger and more practical but also with the same BMW fun factor that they all seem to have.. FOund a nice 2012 550ix M-sport heavily loaded with roughly 25k miles and very clean.

I've read the 550ix is actually pretty quick and I'm wondering how you all feel it handles in terms of daily driving but also putting it in sport mode.

The luxury of it looks incredible..

so what are some of your own experiences good or bad?

Also- it looks like this 550 has the N63TU which is not affected by the recall, is that right?

2011– F10/F11 550i sDrive/xDrive

I think it's the best trade-off between size / performance / cost in the BMW lineup. Just go test drive one...be sure to get M-Sport, and Dynamic Handling Package

I had an '08 M3 sedan. It was an awesome car, the best handling I've ever owned, well, I loved it just as much as my '87 Porsche. Honestly, it was a bit cramped... enough so that after driving it for 3 years I gave up the perfect balance and handling for an X5. Talk about adjustments, lol.

The current 5 series is certainly not a sports car. It is superbly comfortable and if optioned properly very luxurious. It is quiet and handles well, shifts beautifully and is butter smooth all around. It has plenty of room but doesn't feel too big to drive as a personal car.

It's not the kind of car that makes you want to drive fast or aggressively, but it will impress you with some tidy road manners, a smooth polished drivetrain and some understated good looks.

The 550 is a tick quicker, a half tick actually, but that extra grunt comes at the expense of being noticeably nose heavy. I find the 535 to be the sweet spot of the 5ers, with plenty of go for the nice sports sedan that it is. Turn in and nimbleness on the RWD car is far superior to an x-drive example, so think long and hard if you really need an AWD vehicle.

Make sure you get the dynamic handling package and the luxury seating package. Get all the cameras because reward visibility is just OK.

If you take nothing away from my post but this, you are hearing it here.... the 5 series won't handle anything like your 2011 M3. It's a very nice car, but it is NO M3.

What would you be looking at in terms of used M5's for equivalent price? I am sure you've already been through that decision-making process anyway.

I don't know..... Even with the crappy LS2 Grand Touring tire I still enjoy throwing the car around in the twisties. I can't wait to wear these tires out and get a decent set of performance all-seasons like the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3s. They're not run-flats so I will have to address that. Who knows, as RFT technology advances maybe there will be some decent options by the time I need a replacement set.

It's actually really simple.

As long as your expectations are realistic and priorities clear, this decision is quite easy.

Luxury, space and comfort with great performance and handling Vs. one of top notch performing cars, benchmark smaller sedan that's crazy fun to drive, but under utilized most of the time. If you don't have to go "all out" all the time, I can't see you being really unhappy with 550, just don't expect the same as what you have now.

Non existent lowest M5's I've seen around high 60's to 70k

I'm getting a 2012 550i xdrive M-sport, conv pkg, cold weather pkg, luxury seating pkg, premium sound pkg, HUD, top/side/rear cameras. no dynamic handling from what I can see. under 28k miles for about $46k

I'm not sure, but I think the '12s were still N63s, not N63TUs.

N63TU was not introduced until mid year 2013.
