Adaptive lights query...
Hi there.
My father collected his brand new 5 series Luxury Saloon on Saturday and I just wanted to check something RE his adaptive lights... He says that the auto high beams are coming on where necessary but when I asked him if he liked the 'dancing lights' and 'black box' effect he didn't know what I was on about. What I'm asking is does his car have the fancy adaptive lights like my 335d or the lower rent version like on my wife's new 1 series? Apparently in the brochure they appear to describe the fancy version??? Any ideas people? TIA |

Correct. Although on ranges where LED lights are not (yet) available then the adaptive xenons have variable light distribution with the KAFAS2 camera. If LED lights are an option, as in the F1x, then you only get VLD if you specify LED lights.

Interesting. I have a 2015 5 series Luxury with optional extra Adaptive Headlights, costing £540 and with which High Beam Assist came free of charge. They are most definitely xenons and not LED headlights.
The headlights on my car do do the whole adaptive thing, dancing around oncoming cars and cars I am following. You need to have the headlight rotary switch set to Auto - so to the left of the "0" position and then you need to press the auto high beam button on the left hand steering column stalk. And finally, you have be on a road with no street lighting. Then they work. Great fun. |

Yes you're right: the LCI f10 has VLD. Perhaps BMWSKI's car only has HBA (High Beam Assistant) and not full adaptive lights.

I expect BMWSKI's father hasn't been on the right type of road conditions yet to see the dancing lights but if it has Adaptive which includes HBA then they should be dancin' as long as the green A is turned on using the end of the left stalk.

1) Standard Xenons (no Adaptive function) 2) Adaptive Xenons 3) Adaptive LEDs 1 is now standard. 2 and 3 are add-on options. 3 is available only as Adaptive. You cannot have LEDs that are not Adaptive. If you have 3, the term Adaptive LED is also inscribed within your headlight module.

and crucially, since LCI, adaptive (xenon or LED) have the VLD "dancing" function.

He's away at the moment but I will ask him to check them thoroughly on his return. Failing that I will drive down and check them myself. At least I know what to look out for. I also ordered them on my wife's new 1 series before Christmas but I've been told that they only have the HBA function - bummer |

He has them!!!
The car went in for something else and my dad mentioned that his lights were not 'dancing'. They carried out tests and said they should be working fine. That very same night they were working perfectly...a coincidence perhaps??? Anyway, thanks everyone for your help |
