Heads Up Navigation

I was curious who has the heads up navigation display. Is it a good feature? it looks cool and adds more technology to the car. what are your opinions if you do have it.

It seems a good feature, although a bit unusual.

What does the HUD display? Besides the speed and speed limiter setting, I understand that it shows the FM or AM station that you are tuned to. It this correct? Also how much of the navigation prompts does it displays?

would be cool if it was standard... is it worth that much for a "unusual" feature, i would rather spend the money on chocolate

Without HUD, the NAV info is displayed on the full color driver display at the lower half of the tachometer/speedometer. All you need is right there on the dash. IMO and others, there isn't benefits to the HUD feature as a result, especially when it's invisible with polarized sunglasses. So, many will advise it doesn't add anything to the NAV and doesn't look cool since it cannot be seen. I'm sure some others who have HUD will say it's awesome nonetheless.

You might want to check this out in person without HUD.

I have had my last 3 5ers, 2004 545, 2008 550, and 2011 550. Obviously I like it a lot. It is awesome. Critical information is easily accessible without taking your eyes off the road. It works exceedingly well with the navigation system.

The value of polarized sunglasses is grossly over stated. I use Serrengetti driving glasses and they work great in general and they work well with the HUD.

Page 124 of the owner's manual shows the capabilities of the HUD. The 2011 5-series owner's manual is online at bmwusa.com.

The items the HUD displays are:
  • Lane Departure warning
  • Active Cruise Control setting
  • Cruise Control desired speed
  • Navigation instructions
  • Current Speed (updates around 2-3 times per second)
  • Check Control warning messages

The Nav display is nice. There is one arrow showing you which direction to drive. It will also show you the name of the street of the next turn and how far away it is. Once you get close to the intersection, it will show a display of which lane to be in.

Normally, when cruise is off and you aren't using the Nav all you will see is your current speed. The point of the Nav is that you can leave your eyes on the road instead of looking down at the dash. And I find it does exactly that. Anyone that says "well, all you have you to do is look down at the screen to see the Nav instructions" is missing the point. The point is looking down means taking your eyes off the road. I like the HUD more than I thought I would!

Yes, with polarized sunglasses the HUD will be more difficult to see. But only one pair of sunglasses I have are polarized, and I don't use them very often.

I think ibimmer346 has given an excellent description of HUD. I fully agree. Before ordering my F10 535d, I tried it in a 7-series test-ride which also had lane departure warning, active cruise control and speed limit info. The combination of all these options is perfect. For me it was 'trying is buying'. If you can afford it, you should also try it.

I second ibimmer346's description. My thoughts exactly, which I was I sprung for it again after previously having it on my E60. It is new more useful than ever with the iDrive and tech updates: lane departure appears, as well as the extremely useful nav exit lane identifier (which basically tells you what lane you should be in on the freeway to exit or not).
I highly recommend this feature if it is in your budget. And to comment on people who think it is distracting, after driving for a while with it, you often don't notice it anymore, but when you need the info, all you need to do is refocus your eyes. Oh yeah, and if you really don't want it on...you can turn it off.

More chocolate would land you in the ICU while HUD might help you avoid it.

haha $2000 buys you a lot of chocolate. and ibimmer made a point, that split second extra you have on the road may save your life. i am sure there are more accidents caused by cell phone use rather than nav use. that being said maybe i would be able to get that extra feature thrown in at a discount.

My 2013 535i does not show the LDW SYSTEM in the HUD! Only on the dash between dials. It used to but stopped. Dealer does not know why. Any ideas? Thanks.

HUD problem

My HUD will not show the lane departure warning info in the display. The owners manual states yes. Dealer cannot figure it out. Any comments.

Are these features turned on by coding or they are standard?

I completely agree with ibimmer346 description of HUD.
The HUD in my car not does not show the lane departure warning, the same as Sab314.
It does instead show the proximity warning when too cose to the car in front and the difference in velocity is too large for confort, with or without the CC.

Just got the HUD coded and now shows turn signals, telephone contacts and radio/multimedia info. One of the best features of my 550 by far.

It's cool, but I don't think it's worth $1300 MSRP. Wish there was a sport mode on it that shows RPM, speed, and current gear.

Will never own a BMW without it. To each his own but I enjoy not having to look at the gauges 90% of the time.

Absolutely! I had it in my previous BMW and made sure to include it in my current one. It is an awesome active safety feature!

I have it and love it, especially for the nav display. I would not buy another BMW without it now. I agree it would be cool if you could customise the display a bit more though using accessible menu options, rather than coding.

I wouldn't get a car without it. Especially when going down to the US you can't tell what speed you're going with the KM/h only speedometer.
