Sport auto always has paddles (optional on non-sport box but probably standard on 535d) and the sport auto has a different shift program (software). Mechanically identical.

Plus the shifter itself is different. IMO, a far better design and a more tactile shifter to use.

This is easiest way to tell. The "wand" type is non sports, the stubby is sports, I have had both and prefer both the stubby to hold and the sports box in use. When I was looking there were a lot of 535d's with non sports box, which ruled them out for me having had both.

Anyone else notice that with SAT optioned models the steering weighting feel is different (better) than with the standard auto? I sensed that when testing early F10 models. One reason I wanted a model with the SAT option.
