I've decided to swap out the 19" 351Ms on my '13 550xi MSport for a staggered set of VMR v710s in Gunmetal size 20x9 ET35 and 20x10 ET35. I'm also going to install H&R Sport Springs (item 50470-2).

Factory setup is square, tire size is 245/40r19 which has a 26.7" diameter.

Considering a 245/35r20 (26.8") and 275/30r20 (26.5") but thats a pretty low profile all-season tire for NE Maryland roads. The front and rear diameters would be off by 0.30" so the difference in revs-per-mile at those diameters is 7 which is less than a 1% difference -- probably not worth worrying about.

Another option is jumping up in profile to 245/40r20 (27.7") and 275/35r20 (27.6"). Gives another 0.5" in profile height and a closer diameter which equates to delta of 4 revs-per-mile also less than a 1% difference. So the more relevant question becomes is a 27.7" tire diameter too large (1" taller than stock) when coupled with a 1.4" drop?

Curious if anyone has either of these tire combinations coupled with the H&R Sport Springs on their F10.

If so, hows the clearance? Any pics? I combed through the dozens of posts on here regarding tire size and springs but as always it's hard to find the exact same setup for reference.

FWIW - I'm aware a 245/35r20 (26.8") and 285/30r20 (26.7") is the ideal x-drive staggered setup with a 255/35r20 (27.0") and 295/30r20 (27.0") a close second but I didn't mention those sizes as there are no Ultra High Performance All Season Tires in that size, only Summer tires.


WHEEL & SPRING INSTALL COST
What have others paid to install springs (whether dinan, ACS, H&R, eibach) and swap TPMS from OEM to aftermarket rims. Had two local shops quote me $1400 and $2200:

SHOP 1
$200 to swap the wheels and reset TPMS
$600 for front springs
$500 for rear springs
$90/hr for alignment

SHOP 2
$270 to swap the wheels
$160 for new valve stems (they said the valve stems are special to the TPMS and can't be reused so I have to buy four new @ $40 each??)
$913 for front springs (6.3-hrs)
$551 for rear springs (3.8-hrs)
$298 for alignment

Seems very expensive to me. Read a bunch of posts and I'm sure I can do the H&R install myself --never lowered a vehicle but have lifted over a dozen Wranglers and Grand Cherokees over the years-- but with three kids under 10 my weekends are very busy and valuable to me, although not sure they are worth $2gs.

My wheels were $240 to mount balance and swap TPMS. Springs cost me $550 to install. I'm not sure why those quotes are so high although my car is RWD.

Not sure how different this is on a X drive but on my RWD, I swapped out the front strut for my coilovers BOTH sides in 2 hours .... by myself.
The rears were also easy, but kinda need another person, That took me about 3 hours.
This is in my garage, no lift or fancy tools.

My mechanic charges about 300-400$ for springs install over all on all 4 corners.

You can reset the TPMS yourself in 2 seconds in the iDrive ........

LOL at 300$ for an alignment, unless you have electronic shit, even BMW doesnt charge that, my local dealer chargers like 150, local shop does it for 90$ total.

I usually pay 25$ per tire / wheel mount and balance at mom and pops corner shop.

What I did was I got myself a new set of TPMS, because I switch between stock wheels sometimes. New set was like 150? (cant remember) just make sure you get the right part number, they change for different years.

but if your gonna go ahead and keep the same sensors, then for 200, thats not terrible, same with the alignment, however, it doesnt take more than 1 hour ...shit takes max 45 mins.

As far as spring install, keep looking, like i said buddy charges 300-400 for the whole job.

i would do a lot more research on your wheels since you're XDrive as a few members here went staggered and ended up not being able to use it since it caused issues. i know one member here had issues and ended up ordering either the front or rears to match the other set. i know Remmib is our wheel guru here so hopefully he can chime in.

as far as the suspension install if your mechanically inclined i would try to do it yourself and save some money. like 550Reasons and myself we both installed ours. tho i had coilovers which is a lot easier since i did not need to have a spring compressor but yank the OEM's out and swap in the coilovers.

I remember reading some where here that some springs are short enough where you dont need to compress them.

Factory tire size should be 245/40/19 not 245/45/19. Not sure if that was a typo, but make sure you are comparing to the correct factory size.

Yeah, that was a typo -- good catch. I had the tire diameter correct though, 26.7". I edited the original post.

Thanks for the rest of the feedback on pricing and such. I'm still looking but I'm not finding a lot of reputable shops in the area.

The weathers getting better here so I may just do it myself in my driveway or do it at the auto shop on the military base where I work, they have lifts and all the specialty tools. I think it's $8/hr to use.

Thought about buying new TPMS for the new VMRs and doing a summer / winter setup with the factory 19s but we have nights below 40-deg through April and as early as Sep and I head into work early in the AM so I'd only have the summer wheels on for a few months. And I hated removing and reinstalling the hardtop on my Wrangler each spring/winter so I imagine I'll feel the same way about swapping wheels.

As far as staggered setup on AWD... thought the concern had to do with maintaining tire diameters for the revs per minute. Didn't think the tire width had an impact but good point and I'll keep researching.

Wheels / Tires = $2300. Swapped existing TPMS sensors. Beyern Spartan 20" Wheels with Square tire Setup
F: 245/35/20R, R: 245/30/20R
ACS Springs - Due to him having a b*tch of a time getting the struts out, he charged me $540 or something for about 6 hours of labor and cut me a break on rest. Mine is X Drive so I'm sure that contributed to his difficulty in the swap

That's a strange setup. Your rears are much smaller than your fronts unless it was a typo.

245/35/20 + 285/30/20 seems like the closest to OE overall diameter (26.7").
Maybe it's because the OP's car is a xi or maybe it's his location but here in SoCal, wheel swap/TPMS swap runs around $100. Spring install range from $250 to $350. Coil overs will add an extra $50-$100. Alignment is $100-$120. I'd recommend just picking up another set of TPMS for your aftermarket wheels so you don't have to pay again for the swap years down the road.

So I researched a bit more and found the following threads/posts:

All of which seem to indicate that a staggered setup on an x-drive is OK so long as you keep the front and rear tires nearly the same diameter (within 1% seems safe).

OK, so $540 to install the ACS springs. I'm assuming that $2300 included your new Beyern Spartan's and tires.... not just install and TPMS swap.

Correct, the 245/35r20 and 285/30r20 is the closest but there are no UHP all-season tires in those sizes, only summer tires. This is why I was leaning towards the 275/30 in the rear.

As for the buying new TPMS... I initially planned too but then decided to sell the OEM 351s so I may as well save the $220 on a new set of TPMS -- both of which will help offset the astronomical spring install costs here in Maryland.


Speaking of which, I was able to find a 3rd shop through my local Cars & Coffee group -- a Porsche Performance Shop which happens to be less than 2-miles from my house.

SHOP 3 -- $1,050
$100 to mount/balance the rims/tires, swap the TPMS and discard OEM tires
$810 for front & rear spring install (quoted one day, said it could be less)
$140 for an alignment

This seems much closer in price to all of the comments back to me, especially if it doesn't take them all day.

I'll see if I can source another shop or two at this Saturdays Cars & Coffee otherwise I am going to go with the Porsche Shop; place seemed legit when I went in. And, it is super close which helps in enlisting help from my wife (who for some reason does not understand nor is a fan of my car obsession) since she will have to follow me with the rims & tires and take me back to pick my car up.

After a lot of reading, I decided on the 245/35r20 and 275/30r20 setup and my goal is to have everything installed by the end of the month. When I do I'll update the post with some pics.
