advice needed for positioning of aftermarket shadow model designation

Just received my shadow letters for the 520d model designation, I had selected the 'model designation deletion' option during my car customization as I preferred the cleaner look but now I thought I'd give the shadow letters a shot.

The problem is that I have no idea where to start! If anyone has done this before and can provide me positioning tips (how much space to leave from the right corner of the trunk, the top lip and the bottom of the trunk lid) I'd be grateful. I'd hate it to come out as shoddy or ill-placed.

Consider going to a dealeship. Take a picture of the letters on the same model as yours with your phone. Take a tape measure with you and take some measurements as reference points.

My dealership usually does not have any cars in-stock, most are made to order. I think I know someone who also has a 520d but I need to check if he debadged it.

Thanks for the advice.

My 535i (f10) has the shadow trim too. In the meantime, I ordered gloss black badging, side marker trim and front grills.

I ordered a black roundel kit from a guy in Japan. I've vetted him/his product out over the last few days, via email, and decidied to purchase his kit.

I plan on attempting to pull off the exhaust tips this weekend and am going to have them high-temp tolerant powder coated in gloss black.

Check out this pdf link: They offer a nice write up on how to change existing badging to an alternative. I know you have no badging currently, as a reference for the new badging you've ordered. However, you could use the blue trim painters tape referenced, on another BMW like yours, to mark the tape. Then, you could peel it of and reposition it on your car to have the guildine/reference you need to accurately secure your new badging.

Piece of cake!

Thanks for the link, very informative. I'm going to make an attempt sometime next week.

About the exhaust tips: I ordered the OEM shadow tips from BMW but I seem to be having trouble taking off the stock tips. I was advised to simply pull them off but so far I have found them to be very resilient and they just refuse to come off, which leads me to wonder if I'm doing it wrong. Please let me know if you manage to pull it off (pun intended) and maybe share how you did it.

Wow, I didn't realize BMW made the tips in black! I'd rather buy them from the dealer than deal with the hassle of having them powder coated.

Do you mind saying how much you paid for them?

In the meantime, I read an older post where they squirted a few shots of WD-40, from behind the tip, inbetween the tip and the tail pipe. Then you just give it a good twist. Once it breaks loose and gets a bit of the WD-40 between the pressure clips, that press up against the tail pipe, it slips off easily.

What I plan on doing is using a rubber dishwashing glove to wrap around the outside of the tip to get a secure (non-slip) grip and then just use a little muscle for the twist.

Let me know how the lettering goes. Apply the tape, to make a frame around the lettering of the sample car. Draw your guidlines. Then, peel it off in one entire piece. Then, just reapply to your car and you should be good.

Just checked with my dealership. The black exhaust tips for my 300hp twin turbo run $65 each.

Yeah thats about right, I think I paid around $130 shipped. Let me know if the WD-40 trick works, I think my problem is that deep down inside I'm just scared of messing up the tips or the exhaust.

I'm gonna try the tape trick for the letters, sounds like a logical solution. Thanks again!

My exhaust tips just came in. They were back ordered. Because of the wait time the dealership installed the new tips as a courtesy.

The new tips are not slanted (angle cut) at the end like the stock chrome tips. The new tips are are straight cut. In otherwords, they are flat.

Are your new black tips like this too?

Bulldog CFP, I sent you a PM some days back, not sure if you got it. Mine are slanted on both ends but I am slightly worried if I got the correct tips since they have a sticker that says "F07" on them. The part number I ordered is "18 30 8 511 729" so you can check for yourself.

Hey darrko,

Got your pm and sent a response - about a week ago.

In the meantime, went back to the dealership parts department and explained that they ordered and installed the wrong tips. They confirmed, reordered and reinstalled the correct tips and am in good order now.

Thanks!

Cool! Can you confirm if your part number is the same as mine?

Just got home and had a chance to review the receipt.

The part number is referenced on the receipt as follows:

18-30-7-612-731

I was charged $46.86 each x 2 = $93.72 = Tax (Texas) = $101.33 Total

Note: These exhaust tips are gloss black

They look the same as mine. The parts guy referred to them as the, "bologne cut" tips.
