Sat-Nav Maps - Update or Re-install

Now I have had my F10 for about 8 months I`m thinking about seeing if the navigation (Pro) needs updating. When I last did this on my old 335, I part exchanged the sat nav disc for a newer version with my dealer. Having gone through all my papers I have found out that when I picked the car up, no disc was given me.

Does anybody know how the navigation maps on the F10 are updated and what BMW charge? Also what happens if you have a problem and need to re-install the navigation maps again....I don`t see why I should have to pay a dealer to this when it easy to do yourself...if you have the disc?

Did you have any resolution to this? I just ran into it myself. Dealer is charging an insame amount(900 US) to change my f10's navi from euro to NA.

For the F10, updates are loaded via a DVD disc, via the center console DVD player, that gets saved to the car's Hard Drive. This is all obviously loaded at the factory then updates can be done when they come out.....but will cost around $150? (Not sure, check other BMW forums). If in the event you do have issues with the Nav System, then I would guess a new reload would need to be done by the dealer and is only part of a bigger problem since all the I-Drive functionality resides there as well. Covered by Warranty up to the 50K miles or 4 Years.

That is ridiculous. Changing the map for an aftermarket satnav will cost 50-100 USD

Forget the crappy factory nav and take your Garmin Nuvi 270 with you - I do - and it works so much better than the nav that comes with the car. It does Europe and the US without many glitches

There are... ways to do a self-upgrade of navigation map on HDD-based BMW navigation systems... The disks with appropriate map regions can be found online for "free" , the activation code is not free but there are some services which can offer it for significant discount (compared to greedy dealer's prices). Google for "fscmap"
But I agree in general that Garmin or TomTom devices are much superior for navigation purposes, especially considering how cheap they are and how cheap their map data is (some models include a lifetime update of maps in their price) and that all the POI data (such as traffic/red light cameras or police checkpoints ) is fully customizable by you (the user).

hi...

I asked this question at my local dealer the other week, and was told that they can only update the HDD Nav Maps.. He seemed to think the cost is about £350-400 , I nearly fell off the chair

So if anybody knows another way to sort this im all ears....

BMW accessories - page says its £148 for upgrade disc. The handbook tells you how to do it.

give it a while it'll be on the net for free somewhere i'm sure. during the life of my E92 I started out with the factory shipped "official" 07 disc...ended up with the 2010 disc working fine and in-between had 2008/2009 discs all of which came *cough* via t'internet and a DVD burner

i steadfastly refused to pay BMW the 180 GBP they wanted back then for a DVD that had probably 10 new roads in it

Don't be lazy, just do a search GPSunderground forums have Euro map links for BMW's HDD-based navi systems. You can also get it here, along with necessary FSC code (which will cost you much, MUCH less than the dealer as long as you can use the necessary payment systems that this page accepts):

In the US, I updated the installed 2010 maps to the 2011. Cost an exorbitant $650.00 and took a full day. An activation code must be used by the dealer and the new maps are then downloaded from BMW to the F10 hard drive. Not an option to use any kind of disk due to the hard drive. High cost due to service time to install the download.

Worst thing is the maps are no better after the download.

The BMW system is the worst I have seen. My wife has an Audi and the system is worlds better.
