How many miles are too many?

I am looking into buying a F10 550i, and after looking around I found several good prospects. One of the cars that I am looking into has just under 60,000 miles. Is that to many miles? Also what are some of the major costs of a car of this nature? The car only had the 50,000 mile warranty so that is expired, does anyone know of a good third party warranty? After talking to a friend who bought an 2004 550i several years ago with around 40,000 miles and has almost put another 100,000 miles on his car with very few problems. Is this normally the case, and would you recommend I buy a car with 60,000 miles? Thanks for the input!

I used to be a "road warrior" ... putting 35K-50K miles a year on my 'work' BMW. In most cases those were highway miles and I was the sole occupant. I maintained them regularly - frequent oil changes were the most often needed. Brake pads lasted forever since I did so little stopping. Coolant changes were easy every 2-3 years ... along with the every two year brake fluid flushes. My sort of driving also reduced the probability of the oh-so-often BMW automatic transmission failures!

The most 'wear' was headlight sandblasting from road grit but the rest of the car(s) looked and ran better than most other BMWs that were used for 1/4 the miles but ran hard and put away wet!

The point is, miles alone are just one factor to consider when considering a pre-owned car. Properly maintained and regularly serviced is (IMHO) a prime factor to consider. And, if the price is right I say don't be too quick to cross that 550 off your list! BUT, DO have a qualified BMW mechanic do a thorough inspection to tell you exactly what you're buying. (Do that even if the prospect has 1/2 as many miles!)

There's nothing wrong with a 2011. I have a 2011 and it's been problem free. It has a little less than 20k miles though. Only problem I had was mainly cosmetic, such as the FAN button rubbing off, missing the silver strips on my door sills, and that's about it. No tip in or any hesitation/start up complaints people are having. Just look at the service records and test drive it.

Mileage only means you're out of warranty... which might be an issue down the road.

Please can you elaborate on this? I am not aware of any common automatic transmission failures. What are you referring to?

A factor in buying cars is how many miles you will be doing yourself. If you do less than average mileage, then a high mileage car can even out over time. If you do a high annual mileage yourself, then it will really hit the future value as the mileage accumulates. Not to mention the increased risk of an expensive failure.

That's pretty good considering a clean trade-in is only 39k.

I think he means he would pass on a 2011 that was built before 9/10. All other models should be fine.

it has 43,000 miles and was involved in a rear end accident. dealer is asking 44k i'm think about offering 40K what do you think?

I think before 9/10, the 5 series were built with a combox? I am not too sure on this but I know I've read it somewhere before. Vague information I know, but just a heads up.

My 535i built date is 07/10 haven't had any problems. I haven't read anything on the 550i but will check it out.

I had 24k miles on my 2011, and it was literally just getting to its sweet spot.

I would be concerned with > 30k just from a maintenance cost perspective.

I just got a quote from carchex (third party warrenty), so im not to worried about repairs. The only thing not covered is normal maintenance i.e. oil changes.
