TPMS Aftermarket Alternatives?

First off...I've been trying to see if there's a way to disable the TPMS System such that if I don't install TPMS sensors in the wheels there wouldn't be a constant warning that pops up. Has anyone accomplished this?

I've searched the forums but found nothing.

If there's no way around it, then I was hoping I can get some help with where to get less expensive alternatives to the OEM ones.

I've heard of Beru/HUF and RS Technik, among others. But found this brand "Mechunik" that are under $200 for a set of four.

Have you used this brand before?
Is it reliable?

Anything else out there that would work just as good as OEM?

As always, your help is greatly appreciated!!

Why would you want to disable the system? Running low profile tires it's nice to know if I've got a leak before I end up damaging the tire or the rim. I'm a fan of the Huf/Beru units - it's what's the car came with so you know they will work with your car as long as you get the right ones. There are lots of vendors on this site that carry TPMS units that will work with your car. Don't get an off-brand because they are cheap, if you lose a tire or a rim it'll end up costing you more than getting a reputable brand for a few bucks more to begin with.

Good point Chili Palmer...I hadn't thought about the "what if" scenario.

Seeing that you've got a '11 550i, did you get this TPMS PN#36106856227 for your sensors?

I don't remember what part number they were, but I did get them from Ben at RG Sport for a great price.

Aftermarket TPMS instead?

Hey-

I am about to get new tires [good bye RFT] on my 128i and have been wondering about TPMS systems..

The OEM system is bunk - only really alerts if you wreck some thing, useless for slow leaks.. But there are OPTIONS...

There are several aftermarket TPMS systems that will show you actual pressure [w/ alerts for under/over] and temperature in real time.

TyreDog and TireTech are two kinds I found on Amazon.. along w/ the Schrader Kit..

For ~200$ it seems like a solid investment to be able to consistently monitor both pressure and temperature vs. the dash dummy shit but I am having trouble finding anyone [around here] w/ any experience w/ such devices - would love some input [beyond amazon reviews which are pretty positive]

When I do this, the dash light will become useless and it would be nice to code it out vs. constantly argue w/ my car

Such a system seems like a good idea for alot of pps here-

If I recall correctly, the F10's can be coded to display current tire pressure readings on our nav screen. Correct me if I'm wrong fellow enthusiasts.

Yes, the F10 can be coded to show the psi and temp.
Not sure which 128 it is, but if it is the F20, yes it can be coded also to show the temp and psi.

I don't have nav but if the ECU is getting the actual tire pressure values then perhaps I can display them using a bluetooth OBD dongle and Torque??

Direct vs. Indirect TPMS

The US have Direct TPMS for the latest generations of cars, mostly after the RFT were largely introduced (2007 or so). Europe has Indirect TPMS for the same and happy with it. The technologies are well explained by the Tirerack here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...&affiliate=HK8.

For the drivers in Europe looks weird to mess with some expensive hardware inside of each wheel, even more that we have to do a season wheels change twice a year. For example, when I've got my new 20" summer rims from CA at the net price of $2200 each, I've got a heart attack looking at the second holes drilled in a middle of each barrel. Then the vendor explained. these are for the TPMS sensors. And then I fixed it with additional set of flat valves.

The Direct TPMS looks really like a house arrest bracelet, when the function is officially supported with a factory ABS system by BMW, Mercedes, Audi and many other vendors.
