M5 Exhaust on a 2012 550i M Sport?
Need some technical insight. Will the exhaust system (cat back) from a 2012 M5 fit on a 2012 550 M Sport? Thanks in advance.

It should fit. Remember that the engine in the F10 550i is basically the same engine as the F10 M5 but detuned so the diameter of the exhaust should be the same pipe wise as both are V8's. Changes are likely due cat back and muffler back on the M5 vs 550i. However since someone has already easily retrofitted the M5 mufflers into their 550i and used the OEM rear valence it should NOT be too easy to do the full system. Check around some more and I am sure you'll find a willing shop/tuner shop. Dealer will likely balk tho as if anything goes wrong they won't want the blame..however it does depend on your relationship with them tho. Good luck and keep us posted.

Did you guy confirm if the M5 exhaust will fit a 550i F10?
Akrapovic does not offer an option for the 550i F10 only for the M5 F10, I'd like to know what things will I have to modify besides the diffuser in order to fit it in the 550i |

I jumped into the pool and ordered the Akrapovic evolution M5 F10 system even thouigh my car is the 550i F10.
As I see on these pictures there will be some modifications but it should work ok if I change the rear diffuser for the M5 one. BMW M5 F10 BMW 550i |

It works, I have it on my 550i. The competition pkg is what I have and boy is this thing loud now. Thinking about putting on the primary muffler back on to tone it down some as it's giving my GT500 a run for it's money.
You'll need to have a shop adjust the downpipes and move the resonators back some to clear the transmission. Then you'll just need the M5 diffuser, insert and bracket which holds the trunk proximity sensor. |

Bolts up to the stock downpipes. I am using the M5 xpipe but you don't have to. Muffler shop said it was a bit of a pia but not that big of a deal. They had to move the hangers and adjust the tips. Not sure what else ... I didn't really ask for details.

550i is 2010, and the M5 exhaust system came off of a 2015 car. All in all it was about 8 hours labour. It is not really a direct bolt on, but probably overall cheaper than an aftermarket full exhaust. The PNs you need are: 18207845461/3 x 1 of each 18207585358 x 4 18207578229/30 x 1 of each 18207832991 x 2 51618048827 x 1 Where the front of the exhaust system meets the downpipes it is not a true bolt-on. The flanges are a little different: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3y...ew?usp=sharing The workshop I used ran the 550i system back from the downpipes about 24" to the 'bulge' in the pipes (not sure if these contain secondary cats or an absorption muffler) and thereafter it is the M5 system. Some hangers needed to be relocated and the cross member bracket needs to be replaced to accommodate the x pipe (which replaces the centre resonator you have on the 550i). I had the 550i tips refitted as I wanted to retain the 550i SE looks. Thus I had custom fabrication of the tailpipes between the backbox (muffler in US) and tips, using some 57mm bosal exhaust tube. First of all I went without the exhaust flaps but it was too loud and droned, particularly under load like uphill on the motorway at 70mph. See link for the audio of the system without flaps: Start: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3...REk&authuser=0 I have now had the M5 flaps fitted in the outboard tailpipes and it is loud on a cold start and also when it really 'gets on it' over 2500rpm, you can literally tell when the flaps are opening. The power comes on a little harder as the flaps open (as you might expect). It isn't whisper quiet below 2500rpm and is probably just about as loud as most 40 year olds would want, certainly near the limit for me. But it has a nice burble and doesn't scare small animals and children. It is louder than a stock E60 550i. See links for video of low revs with flaps closed: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3...aUk&authuser=0 https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3...bFE&authuser=0 I am not sure why (probably due to something upstream of the exhaust system, ie manifolds) but the 550i is louder and more 'bassy' with the M5 exhaust than the M5 is. AFAIK, the cc and firing order is the same.

Just like what texasjohn said, I also realized that the M5 muffler is louder and deeper on the 550i than a M5. Thought it was only me cause Ive added vibrant resonators.

After reading several post I swapped out the stock mufflers for the M5 Comp Mufflers along with the rear diffuser. Getting the diffuser was one of my biggest hold ups.
This post solved the problem: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthre...EM+M5+Diffuser I also added the Exhaustmeister: http://exhaustmeister.com |
