Has anyone removed just the mid or front resonators on their 550?

Going to play make the car slightly louder (no I dont want M5 mufflers). I figured I could do one at a time and first remove the mid for an xpipe, then the fronts if it was still too quiet, but thought id ask who has done it first.

I recall a thread about someone removing both and they didn't notice much of difference in sound.

I spent a while with my google fu and only found M5 references which only has the front resonators anyway and louder rear mufflers, but I was debating doing a xpipe and pulling all 4, a crossflow and pulling all 4, or just removing the center one and installing an xpipe. I was hoping someone had done it before with the stock mufflers as eventually I will build an entire system, but for the mean time if I could drop $50 in materials and make it sound a bit better, I figured it would be worth it.

I had a resonator delete with an X-Pipe on my stock 550i exhaust and there was no difference in sound other than start-up. Look for an exhaust or do a custom one...

Im going to build a custom one when I get downpipes, for now just bored and want to get a bit of volume. Eventually with the catless downpipes I will have 3 inch all the way back with 3 mufflers total (possibly resonators if needed), but I'm not ready to drop $800 in steel and mufflers without having the downpipes to take advantage of it.

there is no difference in sound. I did a resonator delete (xpipe) and there was no difference in sound. I also tac welded the OEM exhaust flap/valve open, and with all that done, hardly anything, if at all. not noticeable. I went with a full custom system after that. Cat-back. full 3" system, quad tips. Flowmaster 10 series mufflers just to add a little rasp to the note. sounds amazing.

I already have the $40 in supplies (Xpipe and a stick of 2.5), probably going to cut and weld next week. When I fab up an entire exhaust I will post pics (I'm pretty handy with a welder) but this is just to curb my OCD in the mean time.

Haha i hear ya! But be careful because the piping is metric and is more like 2.75." Mine has a good amount of sound to it and essentially, i may as well not have mufflers as the 10 series i have on their now i added just for a different sound, not sound suppression. But yeah, if you do catless DP i would do larger mufflers for sure.

Ehh im not too worried, dual 2.5 is more than sufficient for 700+ hp, let alone a stock car with a piggy back, factory mufflers will still be the restriction on mine. Ive done the 3 muffler setup on TONS of cars and theres zero drone, incredible sound, and if its too much I can always slap a pair of magnapack resonators on there to get it back down to factory levels... I just dont have the spare coin for a custom tune, downpipes and all the steel/components at the moment.

Those are pretty sexy... if I had 5K I didnt need id probably just do the Akrapovic system, but sounds like you had the right idea on going custom and just picking tips. How much were those and where did you get them if you dont mind me asking? I have a storm trooper thing going on with my white 550 and black wheels/spoiler/wrapping and would love to get something like that if its not a billion dollars, but I had just planned on getting whatever tips I bought coated black to match. CF is definitely sexier though!

oh yea, 2.5 will flow just fine. I was just stating that they were more like 2.75 for ease of install purposes

crazy story, but I found the company that supplies the tips for Akrapovic (I can order matte, or gloss) and I can get them for less than half of what Akra tips cost. hit me up if you want to chat about acquiring a pair! azimmerlyjr@cktrucking.com. I can place orders for all sizes and finishes, single or dual outlet.

That means I get to slip fit instead of swedge The shop my buddy owns doesnt have a tubing bender/expander so I purchase mandrel bends and weld them all together when I do build exhaust, knock on wood sounds like it might be even easier now.
