I performed the throttle reset procedure that is documented in this thread a couple of days ago on my 528i.
The throttle is much more responsive now (almost too responsive, jerky) but this is much better than the lag that I had previously. It will be interesting to see what happens over time.

the throttle reset works perfectly for me... so far that is! i just tried it out today and if feels better than it did before
1) hit start button once to turn on power (Don't start the engine) 2) then press the accelerator down to the floor for 5 sec 3) then hit start button once to turn off power 4) then remove foot from accelerator 5) then waite for 2 minutes 4) then start the engine like normal and try it out! |

For me, The jolting is fixed but I still have this throttle delay problem. The workshop manager told me he has found the solution which is changing a certain part in the throttle housing (?) or may be the housing itself (I don't know). Anyway, I'll be updating you soon with my results.

Hi I just had my engine software updated / downloaded by my dealer. Lots of jerkiness is gone. From crusing or when rolling at carpark speeds, the jerk has been reduced like 90 percent.
Your cars should be still under warrenty so it's advisable to do it ASAP. I also have a 535i. I'm really glad I had this update free. Took like 6 hours to download into the car. |

I've had the jerkiness and hesitation since day 1.
I was kind of resigned to living with it as a "quirk", but nevertheless I hated it. After complaining to the dealer about jerkiness and rough shifting on at least three occasions, I finally had my software updated, and all I can say is......WOW! It is seriously like having a brand new car all over again! Oddly, it wasn't the jerkiness that prompted the software update. It was problems I was having with BMW Assist. Some other little changes I noticed - Some of my iDrive menus have changed, notably the phone options while I am on a call. The dash display (the time/date/temp/dist to empty/mileage/etc) sems to be blank every time I start the car. Have to push the button on the end of the turn signal stalk to activate. No biggy there. Just odd. Anyway, for those who complain about the jerkiness and hesitation, the software update totally cured mine. |

Goodchip,
It's great, that software has solved your gearbox issues. However, I would like to warn all the enthusiasts of software updating about possible consequences… Blank screen - is actually a bug of the new software, my dealer is promising to get this solved with new software..... God knows what other bugs that new software would bring…. I had experienced numerous problems after the two software updates: 1. The first one was done on January 14, 2011 My gearbox started hesitating and jerking, service interval got screwed up, I could not see movies in the owner's manual, park assistant did not work, ... there was something else I've spent 3-4 days in the service and they could not rectify all problems. The software simply did not want to install correctly onto my car…. RETURNING BACK to the old software apparently is not possible. 2. On April 11, 2011 new software was flashed.... Service interval started showing 5000 km less to the next service, I got blank screen on the dashboard, gearbox jerkinness remained... After MANY visits to the dealer and e-mails/phone calls on various levels, they changes my gearbox. It took then 1000-1500 km of adaptation before it stopped jerking... The dealer then explained that probably the gearbox did not want to "understand" the new software correctly, therefore changing the gearbox was the best solution.... AFTER ALL.... 10 months down the line, I am still waiting for solutions to, what is supposed to be, software fixes: blank screen, incorrect interval to the next service (can not be changed manually, need new i-drive software to solve this). |

Sudden Acceleration GONE!!!
I HAD THIS SAME ISSUE WITH HESITATION/ACCELERATION AND FOUND A SERVICE REP THAT KNEW HOW TO FIX IT.
DROPPED 2011 BMW 528i OFF WEDENESDAY AND PICKED UP SATURDAY. TO MY SURPRISE, VEHICLE RUNS GREAT AND HESITATION IS GONE! APPARENTLY THIS VEHICLE ADAPTS TO OUR DRIVING PATTERNS. SO THE TECHS WERE TOLD BY PUMA TO REMOVE ALL ADAPTATION VALUES AND RE-INSTALL TO VEHICLE COMPUTER. IT'S ONLY BEEN 2 DAYS BUT THE PROBLEM IS NO LONGER THERE. I FINALLY ENJOYED THIS VEHICLE WITHOUT FEELING LIKE SOMEONE REAR ENDED ME OR FEELING THE CAR IS NOT GONNA MOVE THEN SUDDEN ACCELERATION. DON'T TAKE "NO PROBLEM FOUND" FROM YOUR SERVICE REP, MAKE THEM LOOK FOR IT. BMW HEADQUARTERS KNOWS OF THIS ISSUE BUT KEEPING IT HUSH. |

Did reset procedure; no jerking, but steering feels "heavier" now?
Hi,
Did the reset procedure (start/hold accelerator 5sec/etc...) and the car is absolutely different now than before! But....I wasn't expecting the steering response to feel different after this. It is decidedly heavier, especially at slow speeds - any insights on how I might be able to readjust this? Did others notice a difference in steering feel after this procedure? Thx, mm |

I was told by my local Shop Foreman that the issue is with the transmission not wanting to downshift 2-1, and that it is a known issue....with no known fix.
This would explain why it's much worse when rolling, rather than completely stopped. The car reacts slowly in second gear and then decides to downshift to first, and reacts very strongly. |

When you set off from a junction it's like it's spooling up before it goes. Worse if there's a car coming, by the time you start moving you've panicked at the car bearing down on you so you hit the pedal a bit harder and it's like launch control! Driving me mad to be honest! |

I tried the throttle reset last night - doesn't solve my issue unfortunately.
I think the issue for me is as Needsdecaf describes. It appears to be worse if you do not come to a dead stop at a junction. It must be that it tries to start off in 2nd so effectively you're having to kick down to get it moving. |

Guys,
I have the 528i and ever since i bought it hesistated in acceleration when moving from rest. I have taken it several times to the BMW dealer and everytime they kept saying they will reset it and will install an updated software. This did not solve the problems. Everytime i picked up the car, it seemed to improve a bit but was never a normal car that was ready to accelerate at anytime. It was not until i wrote a formal complaint and handed it over to the Service Manager himself that real action was taken. The car now is at their workshop waiting for a Gearbox Mechatronics replacement. The Manager told me that they have to order this from Munich and that will take a few days as i am living in Qatar. I have read somewhere in this forum that this was the real cause of the hesitation. All I can do now is wait to see if that is the real cause of the problem. And if that is the case, then i wonder why BMW does not recall all their cars and repair them instead of giving us all this pain. |
