My M550d and 850i

Since I have had requests from a few users on pictures of my cars I have tried to get some pictures taken.
Sadly it's been pretty much raining straight for the last two weeks so there has been no opportunity for me to take any good pictures, so I took some in my garage, and pictures I have on my computer for now.

I'll make a post for each car with attached pictures.

I'll start with my garage.

Nice stable of horses I'd give my left one for the 850i. What a classic. Way ahead of it's time in terms of looks and aerodynamics. How does the suspension handle compared to the F11?

Hehe, well, cheaper than an M5, in every way. But not cheap.

Had it 8 years, spent more than double what I paid for it over the years, so this one will never be sold.
I'll keep,it until I die, or they stop selling fuel

The 8 series is somewhat underrated, so you can still pick the up cheap, but that might change.

Suspension on mine is upgraded, have eibach springs, bilstein shocks and fixed camber plates giving me -1,3 degree camber, this helps a lot on cornering. The 19" wheels make a difference too, the stock ones was 16" with 17" as an option.
Handling is pretty good, but a bit stiffer than the f11 but not uncomfortable.
It's not a performance sports car, but it's a lot of fun to drive up mountain roads, it corners well, and has enough power to make you smile.
It is a bit of a handful at low speeds, you tend to have to constantly correct it, but when you hit 130kph something happens and it just becomes very stable, going 200-250kph is effortless and feels very safe. But I guess that is what they was built for, crossing Germany in a day.

Interesting. Doubt they had an alloy block and steering rack back then but what is the weight distribution as the heaviness of the V8 may have something to do with the handling. The power steering has also come a long way since that time as they are speed rated now.

Looks like the 850 only gets out every now and then to flex its muscles based on how you tuck it into the garage. How many miles on the clock and have the flip up headlights stood the test of time?

What mods do you have planned for the F11?

Yeah they are quite nice, 9x19 et 0mm front and 10,5x19 et14mm rear.
Got them in -07 so they need a refurb now, some corrosion bubbles on the centers and some has flaked off sadly.
Being a 3 piece wheel at 1000 euro a piece back in -07, they are definitely worth refurbishing.

The 850 is v12, the 840 was v8.
Actually most of the engine is aluminum I believe so it's not very heavy.
The car is 1790kg, heavy for 1990, but not too bad today, think BMW managed to get it pretty much 50/50 on the distribution.
It has a steering box, not a rack, so the steering tend to develop some play over the years, by replacing some bushings and tightening the box, most can be removed, but it will never be as good as a rack.
Some 8's came with rear when steering too, so this thing was the pinnacle of automotive technology in its day.
My car is a 1990, it has airbag, abs brakes, traction control, onboard computer, dimmable rear view mirror and things like electric steering column was an option.

The flip up headlamps are just fine, I rarely pop them up though, use the grille lights as drl's. The low beams are halogen projectors, so not the best, high beams are great as it has low beams, high beams in the pop up's and the grille lights as additional high beams.
Have considered taking them apart for a clean, but I rarely drive in the dark since the sun sets around 11 at night here in the summer.

You are right about the use, had the car for 8 years and have put on it 35.000km in that time.
The car just passed 160.000km (100.000miles) this year.
As for the way it is tucked in my garage it is because it is pretty much in winter storage now, only use it between April and October and I don't take it out in the rain.

I'm not sure about the f11, I may replace it in a year for an LCI model, or an M5, so I'm not sure I want to spend any money on modding it.
But I would like an M5 LCI grille, wrap the mirrors, a drop and some nice concave 20" or 21" wheels. But I may wait for the next car before modding.

The 850 is approx 1800Kgs. 450Nm of Torque. 0-60 mph in 7.2 secs. They are a fair bit slower compared to 650Nm Torque and heavier F10 550 (approx 2000Kgs) running down 4.4 secs. You can put that down to advancement in engine technology.

How many miles on the clock and have the flip up headlights and the tilt forward Coupe seats stood the test of time?

What mods do you have planned for the F11?

Ah updated while I replied

Yes they are slow compared to current cars.

As for power, mine is supercharged
Doing the final tuning on the engine map, and the goal is 470hp and 600nm of torque.
0-60 target is 5 seconds flat. Not bad for a 25 year old 4 speed auto.

Seats are just fine, some have had issues with the tilt handle breaking for the seat tilt as it was plastic on the early ones, later they were metal reinforced.
But you really don't use the rear seats. There is no room, a kid under 10 is ok, but for an adult more than a 15 minute ride is painful.
There is no legroom, and if you are 6ft or taller there is no headroom either.
