F10 550xi making horrible noise on startup!

Hi Guys on my F10 550xi for the past week every time I start the vehicle in the morning it makes a grinding noise after the vehicle turns over. It only has been happening since the weather has been 30degrees or below. I've had the ccp package done a few months ago and about two months ago had the spark plugs changed under maintenance. The vehicle currently has 44k on the dash I was wondering if anybody else experienced any problems like this? Thanks.

I would definitely take it in since it's still under warranty. A grinding noise can never be good.

I have had the same sound, and was only able to replicate it on overnight cold starts. The dealer was unable to re produce the sound and dismissed the issue. I am still CPO'd but I don't want to pay for a diagnostic if they can't replicate it. It's a frustrating issue. This is all before and after CCP, HPFP. I have a feeling it is the timing belt or some belt that has an issue on start up.

your starter, mine was doing same noise as yours (I think) and they replaced it under warranty.

I always thought this auto-start nonsense would wreak havoc on a starter. Heck, I think even the manual warns of additional wear due to auto start.

I'm in the habit of putting it in sport mode whenever I start, I need to get it coded to default to sport.

Mine does it sometimes as well. Gives that sounds like if you turn the key in the ignition when the car is already on. I'm out of warranty.. Wonder how much something like this would be to replace

The starter was replaced about a year ago. I couldn't imagine this would be a faulty starter already this is crazy. Time to make another appt with my SA again!

Yeah it's crazy. This morning it didn't make the sound but it took at least a few seconds before it turned over. Now I'm thinking maybe it's a fuel pump too. Very frustrating.

If it is a bad starter, shouldn't the OP's car make the grinding noise while it is cranking and not afterward?

If the starter mechanism that engages the flywheel is sticky it may still be in position when it isn't supposed to be and make the grinding noise. Googling "bendix" may add some insight. From the description my first avenue would also be starter
