Shopped for a 535, bought a 550!

After shopping for a few weeks for a 535 and considering a few others such as the A6 (and online shopping for months before that), I finally got to the point of getting approval for the pull ahead program to get out of my 335 a little early, then quickly found myself running out of options that I could take delivery on before 6/30 deadline. The program ends on Tuesday and I've been told BMW said definitively that it won't be extended again. There were only a few new 535's with DHP left and none that really fit enough of what I wanted to make me pull the trigger… So, as I joked with my CA about a 550 they had on the lot (asking him to sell it to me for the price of the 535 ), I decided to get real numbers on it. We had gone out back just to look at the colors in person and I made the mistake of sitting in it, then driving in it.. couldn't resist it if I tried… I didn't try

I pick it up tomorrow. Pretty pumped after being on the fence with the 535. Not on the fence because of the engine, I loved the 535. But the available cars just didn't get me excited. This one has more than I would've ordered (including the monster that lives under the hood), but not a single option I'm not happy to have… (including the monster under the hood!).. nothing I feel like I'm paying for but don't at least like. First BMW I've ever bought off the lot and only the 4th car I've ever bought off the lot. So pretty happy to avoid that 2 month wait, yet still get everything I wanted, and more.

Thanks to everyone that helped talk me back into the DHP. I had convinced myself I could live without it and explore some of the few after market options available. Glad I didn't go that route.

I'll post more pics tomorrow after I get it, but here's the specs and a couple pics from the dealership. I will promptly make the only 4 mods I'll ever make:

1. Install 2 child car seats (though I may keep those on-demand this time, such nice soft nappa leather lol).
2. Install 2 simple, plain bmw license plate frames with no gaudy dealership advertising on it.

Some new ones, again not the best lighting and the car is already dirty from a rainy weekend.. It looks so black in these pics, just didn't capture the color as well. In person, it's much more blue than these look even on the cloudy, overcast day. Last one is a side by side collage I did showing my outgoing 335 above the 550.

UPDATE: some new pics with good camera. Still don't feel like I've done even a remotely good job capturing how awesome this paint color is.. no matter what I do, still looks darker in the pictures, even with these on a sunny day with the SLR. I'm no photographer at all, camera is a decent Canon SLR, but far from high quality I'm sure.. But this paint has so much depth and changes so much (pretty cool to notice as I washed it), I may have to improve my photography skills to capture it.

Excellent choice. For all it's little fits and niggles (like having to top off the oil every couple K miles...) this car is just perfect for me.

You're gonna love it!

Great looking car, but you need to tint the windows and get a pair of M5 grilles. With the M5 grilles the chrome ring ties in all the subtle chrome bits, and the black slats make it look just that much more aggressive.

Either way, beautiful looking car!

I'm in the same boat, my 335 lease will be over next year and was seriously looking at 535 but as you said they don't excite me as much. 550 on the other hand does and can't wait to make the switch. Thank you for your post, it reaffirms my belief. 550 is a beast but not as in your face as the M5. That's exactly what I want...

Thanks guys for the comments. Got to take it out a bit today but rain made pictures a useless effort. Took some ill post later but the car is dirty already and lighting wasn't great. But man this thing is fun. Handles well with the DHP (a must for anyone on the fence) and so fast. I managed to get a bigger, "more mature" car that some will call a "cruiser" or "executive saloon," yet it is actually faster than all of the small sporty cars I've had (335, S5, etc)

Thanks! I actually prefer the silver grilles on this one, don't like the black against the dark blue. On a true black one I might've done that..

To each they're own, but I'm too old for tints, stopped doing that a long time ago (college was the last time for me). Plus, I avoided the black leather for the same reason as the grilles, didn't like against the blue, so no way I'd tint and hide that ivory leather I love so much on this car. I saw pics on here then saw the car I bought at the dealership, and the ivory just lightens up the interior so well while also creating a sporty look since it's so light, not a beige but closer to white. Wouldn't want to hide that even if I did still like dark tints.

I've uploaded some new pics (first page) but I still want to get it cleaned again and find a good backdrop to take some cool shots. I'm not photographer, but this has been out a while, so I want to take some that at least show it in a different light, so to speak.

Fully agree on both. I thought I was the only person ever who likes chrome grilles and window trim. Although I must admit on all white, dark grilles and window trim look great.

Friend talked me out of tinting my windows, though he's done his (also silver) 3 series. His exact words "...classy car like that you don't tint the windows...". Although he said it jokingly and admitted it to be a bit of exaggeration, I'm glad he made me think and decide against it.

I actually noticed a big difference from the grilles on the cargon black 535 m sport and the 550 carbon black m sport. They're silver on the 550 and I guess chrome on the 535, or really, I guess the difference is not on the front but sides of the slats, silver on the 550 and black on the 535, thus brighter on the 550. I noticed as soon as I saw this one that I eventually bought how much better it looked. Wouldn't necessarily have sought it out until I saw that.. But I'm with you, on certain colors, black looks better. Had a black 335 with black/chrome grilles and to me, that was perfect. Same for our white X5 and maybe some of the grays but not all. I like the all black grilles too but prefer the chrome to great it up just a bit and retina the that distinctive look of the kidneys.

I do almost always prefer the shadow line window trim now though. I don't dislike the chrome or silver options, but the shadow line just seems to always look sportier. First car I had the choice on was an '07 X5 and I was against it until I saw one in person, then I got it..
