Anyone have their F10 550i engine seem to cut out at 5K rpms?
I have a 2013 550i, and I noticed some strange, occasional behavior. Sometimes when I floor it in first gear from a roll, the engine will pull hard up to a little over 5,000 rpms, then the engine will seem to "run out of breath" up until redline. I don't remember the traction control kicking in. When I shift to second and take it up to redline, the problem doesn't happen.
This doesn't happen consistently, and I've only experienced it a few times. Regardless, I'm curious if anyone else has experienced it and whether anyone knows what could be happening. Thanks!

Yeah, first gear isn't the best for putting the power down. Get the car going and put it into second and third for maximum effect.

probably 2 issues at work - turbo lag and, to some extent, the transmission if you are used to manual transmission or the double clutch automatic transmission. Compare the difference in torque thrust when flooring it from a dead stop versus flooring it while cruising at about 55mph in M5 gear sport+mode. Quite a bit of difference - the turbos are primed for boost when cruising as opposed to their preparedness from an idle.

1st is almost useless on this car. If looking to get off on a fast start I paddle to second and then punch it. 1st goes so quickly and its a much smoother acceleration.
Never had 1st bog down around 5k so my guess is you are kicking in traction control- watch for it to blink on the dash. |

Thanks, guys.
Yeah, my guess is that traction control cut in and I didn't notice it. I have a 6-speed (love it!), and I agree that I hit the redline absurdly quickly in first. It's nice to feel that kick in the pants, though!

Just wondering...could it be that you had the Dynamic Driving Control toggled to "comfort"? As you mighty know, the car defaults to Comfort mode upon each restart.
Try configuring in "Sport+" mode for BOTH chassis and drivetrain next time you plan on a performance run. Selecting the drivetrain configuration for sport+ mode is suppose to get you more RPM as well as a more aggressive throttle. Quote:
