rubber hose in fuel pocket f10 550i

Hi, does anyone know what this rubber hose is in the fuel pocket? It was hanging out the other day and prevented me from closing the fuel door. I pushed it back in and all is fine. Just curious what it is/does.

I am guessing this is a small air way, to get air into the area when door closed!

On my 535, that is where the locking rod comes out to lock the outer door.

Must be the umbilical cord which is severed when the vehicle leaves the factory (sorry, couldn't help myself ;-)

lol.

ok, the hose itself is only about 3 inches long and can be completely removed. if you look inside where it's inserted, there is a much smaller hose that I presume goes inside the larger hose when fitted. still no idea what this does. At first I thought it was a pressure valve of some sort, or a gas overflow valve, but no idea anymore.
