Wow. What a PITA. Took the car out of winter storage and tried to use they the thigh support. Could hear the motor but no movement . I could move it back and forth freely.
Of course a broken gear that the dealer doesn't sell. You have to buy the complete motor assembly 250$+ !
I'm trying Jb weld to see what happens but ordering one from eBay.

Just to add. I think what can break this is added force, so if you are detailing, working on the car, etc. Don't put any extra lateral force on it. It all rest on that plastic gear !

I've attached the little gear glued.

Did it work? Do u have details on how to detach the thigh support? Do u have to remove the entire seat?

I have the same issue on passenger side that I need to address. There are several YouTube videos (one guy explains it real good on a 7-series) that shows how to replace the gear. As the OP pointed out it is plastic gear that breaks with any amount of weight on the thigh support, and is a real PAIN. Gear sells for $15-20, but the time it takes to replace is probably 2 hours easy.
