Power chip f10 520d - chipexpress reviews please

I've been looking at getting a power upgrade on my 520d and have looked at the plug-in system from Chipexpress. Power up from 181bhp to 224bhp, cost £395. I like the fact it's plugable and removable as I have a company car and shouldn\'t really do it.

Has anyone used this or can recommend an alternative. Comments appreciated thanks.

What is the insurance consequences of using that sort of modification in a company car?

Well worth investigating before use...

Andy

I'm in a similar position to you.

I've narrowed it down to

Chipexpress, DTUK and I particularly like the sound of the Spider box

I can't find much in the way of real life testimonials though.

I have spoken to a guy I know who does, amongst other things, ECU tuning. He is by no means a specialist but is pretty insistent that these boxes will not produce the effects they suggest and more over could cause problems with the Diesel Particle Filter because of the excess fuelling.

Sorry I can't add anything helpful but if you find out any more, please share.

Thanks.

DTUK had some pretty good reviews on the E90 forum I seem to recall, but yes buyer beware and all that - there are indeed known cases of DPF problems caused by 'generic map' boxes as opposed to proper ECU maps.

I had a ProBitz on my F10 520 auto. It was more aggressive from a standing start and I very rarely used the sports gearbox setting with it. Have used these in a few different cars with no problems. I did about 4K miles with this on the F10 and then suffered a high pressure fuel pump failure. It's probably not linked but have not put tuner box back on as it's due a service. No errors showed up on the BMW diagnostics re:tuner box so they won't know you had one fitted. I am putting mine back on after the service as the cars more fun. My wife drove the car after the fuel pump was replaced and said the car feels dead compared to before. She did not know it had a tuner box prior.

As I understand it, these add-on boxes work by connecting between the fuel rail/turbo pressure sensors and the ECU. The box sends artificially reduced signals to the ECU, which causes it to increase fuel and turbo pressures to what it determines to be correct, but what, in actuality, is greater than design levels, thereby increasing BHP and torque.
My concern is that these increased pressures could eventually cause damage to seals, fuel pump, DPF and other related components.
There's also the insurance angle - if you don't declare the modification and if, say in the event of a front end collision, you were unable to open the bonnet to remove the box, you could find your claim being rejected.
I also think that, if any engine warranty claim was sufficiently substantial, BMW would probably subject the ECU to detailed diagnosis and I would think the increased pressures would be logged therein.

I have an Abrieb chip which was fitted to my last 520d 10plate, (and 520d before that) it also was a company car, but Ive moved company and now have a 535d, it sadly doesnt work well on it, but if you are interested, its for sale at £90.

If you look up Abrieb, its recommended on many forums, I never had an issue when removing for servicing and its a very small neat aluminium box :-) Similar output (was as quick as my old 530i.

Hi Andy,

Did you decide to go with a tuning box? If so whats your feedback?

Found some info on a volvo forum which may be of interest, link as follows:

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/archiv...p/t-13862.html

I would also be interested in any ones feed back regarding a tuning box on a 520d.

Thanks
Paul.

At the moment there is no ECU tuning solution for the F series diesel BMW's. They're running a new protocol which effectively damages the ECU when you try to flash to it. We've successfully obtained ECU software read's from them, but writing back to it is still a bit hit and miss.

Some tuners in Europe are telling us they've managed with a success rate of 50% (which is not a risk I would want to take on my own or a customers car).

We can get hold of some better tuning boxes than the ones in the thread above if you absolutely want one. They're manufactured by DIM Sport (one of the better names in the business). You're looking at around EUR 500 inc delivery, but drop me an email if you want a formal price.

I haven't tried one myself yet as I'd rather wait until we've perfected the ECU remap solution.

I found that the chipexpress one works well with the 535d. I tried one other one from bluespark automotive but it kept putting the car in limp mode and it did not seem to add much power either. (It was £200 wheras the chipexpress was £350 - with a voucher code)

If you email them and ask them for a voucher code, they may send you one. (worked for me - got £50 off)

Good luck.
