ZF 8 Speed Automatic Transmission for BMW Explained

Featured on 5POST HOMEPAGE.

If you have 6 minutes to spare, here's ZF's own (rather dry, but informative) video pitch.

ZF has developed a new automatic transmission for cars with eight speeds that can achieve 11% fuel savings. The priority aim in development, however, was not the maximum number of gears, but minimum consumption.

ZF engineers had set the bar high to produce a new benchmark for automatic car transmissions. The second generation of the ZF 6HP 6-speed transmission, that entered production only in 2006, defines standards that are hard to top: reaction times faster than human perception, direct engine linkage by early-stage torque converter lock-up and intelligent, adaptive control software, that almost reads the driver's intentions from his foot. But the new transmission is capable of even more - it saves (even more) fuel. It also guarantees ultimate driving enjoyment, as well as the variability needed to be able to use future technologies.

I think I took away that this gearbox can drop from 8th gear down to 2 and can take up to 1000NM of torque.

What freaked me out was the narrator. I swear she is the same woman who told me she had cake. The Cake is a lie dammit!

Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Audi and Chrysler

I believe that this transmission box is used with the new Rolls-Royce Ghost (which also shares the BMW iDrive), Bentley Mulsanne, and Audi A8. And it's not only the high end auto makers who're using this box. It appears that some of Chrysler's models will be joining the party soon.

Here's a write up in Car and Driver

Its good BMW isn't the only one using this very glad about that,it's better for the car manufactoring business then we can compare, but why Mercedes Benz hasn't been listed concern's me since Merry is the best of the 3 German car manufactors,BMW is second and the guy's in IGOLSTADT at Audi are third

My head hurts from viewing this video. Talk about complicating a trans. The way i see it, its a still a slush box with a complex torque converter.
I'll take a DCT or I'll keep it simple with a good-Ol manual trans.

Mercedes Benz designs and builds their own transmissions in house. They do not use outside vendors as BMW does.

Anybody know what the spec is for replacement transmission fluid?

I've never bought into sealed for life fluid.

I doubt you can get a straight answer from BMW on this. I think I would wait for the Bentley manual. I spoke to a Bentley rep at Bimmerfest and he said it's usually year 3/4 of production. Till then I'll just hope for the best.
