I can see the boys in Ingolstadt high five'n each other. This is what the next A6 will have to go against? hahaha

Bangle may have been polarizing, but that does not mean returning to conservative designs is automatically good. This 5 series does not standout from the crowd. This may not be a bad thing, but in the long term, innovation is essential, and always sticking to same old designs will eventually render a firm out of fashion. Look at Jaguar, prior to the current XF and XJ models, their cars were seen as increasingly outdated. Their design language has not really been altered since 1968. What was good in 1968 may not necessarily be good in 2009.

Obviously, some key attributes that identifies with BMW has to be there (i.e. kidney grilles, angel eyes, roundel etc), but that does not mean one should not push the envelope.

Keep the essential attributes of what make a BMW, but also strive for innovations in new designs.

I really like it. Time will tell if the new 550 will be enough to get me out of the M3.

interesting how much the bangle butt was copied but how the e90/2 trunk/rear end lines have emerged as a prominent styling feature in new bimmers

I think it's nice, more linear than the current 5-series although I think the current series have the best back lights/tail-part of all series except E92.

For me it looks like this new model brings the 5- and 3-series closer together again. Current 5-series is more distinct from current 3-series..

I bet it drives great also! I'll stick to my 335 for a while because I love it...and besides...I can't afford to buy new cars when ever I feel to...

Sooooo boring! I'm sure it drives nicely, but if I had any desire for a sedan in this price range, I'd look at a lightly preowned Quattroporte. At least you could find it in a crowded parking lot.

Hey now..I had a Z4M coupe, and even I thought the Z4 roadster was ugly. I actually LIKE the current 5 series though--I think that puts me in the minority. At least it's somewhat distinctive. This new one is as interesting as a hangnail.

This has been beat to death but it is simple- EU pedestrian protection standards require that the front bumper have a cushioning zone as well as the front hood. All EU brands are doing this.

There is less aluminum in the unibody (the E60 front clip was entirely aluminum mated to the steel by a special bonding process). There is more aluminum in the remainder of the car- doors, body panels etc.

The weight increase is ~250 lbs. depends on trim and equipment. The body in white weight increase is about half of that (the rest is because of packaging: larger brakes/wheels/runflats/seats/trim/more glass). They used a denser/heavier steel in the lower areas of the car A/B-pillar to improve side impact protection. This is dense stuff that is heat molded so it is heavy.

The car also grew slightly.

Well I'll tell you, there will be no excuse for the F30 to be heavier.

Tell that to the government- they will begin implementing new roof strength rules for MY2011.... I think they want us in F1 Abrahms tanks.

We all want things to get lighter and trust me when I say that we are not the only ones! F30 is going to do its best while also meeting a pricepoint. I truly wish I could afford an all aluminum space frame BMW but that is well out of reach... but one out of steel that weighs more will still do the trick better than anything else out there (unless I am missing something).

+1

I read recently that due partly to VW's acquisition of Porsche that the 911 may be on the chopping block. VAG wants a lot more innovation and new models for Porsche and the fact is that the mid-engine designs like the Cayman handle better. FWIW.
